Processing of the Jack Yeager California 1970 ballot propositions scrapbooks was completed by undergraduate students from
the University of California, Riverside as part of the Special Collections & University Archives Backlog Processing Project
started in 2015. This project was funded by the UCR Library and administered by Jessica Geiser, Collections Management Librarian.
The June 2, 1970 election in California had 8 propositions on the ballot. California Proposition 1, Bonds for University of
California Health Sciences Facilities, was a legislatively-referred bond act which would have provided for a bond issue of
$246,300,000 to provide capital for University of California Health Science Facilities. It was defeated in the election. California
Proposition 7, Interest Rate on State-Issued Bonds, was a legislatively referred constitutional amendment that would have
increased the maximum interest rate the State could pay on its currently unsold general obligation bonds from 5% to 7%. It
was passed in the election.
Jacques "Jack" Yeager was a lifelong Riverside resident, born in 1921. He received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering
from UC Berkeley in 1947, interrupted for a few years during World War II when he served with the U.S. Navy Seabees building
airports in the South Pacific.
After graduating Yeager returned to Riverside to join the family business, E.L. Yeager Construction Co., which he ran with
his brothers Dick and Gene. The company grew and worked on many major projects in the Inland Empire, including grading the
UC Riverside campus land, creating the "C" on Box Springs Mountain behind campus, and upgrading the 91 into a freeway.
Yeager was also heavily involved in local community and political efforts. He helped raise money for a variety of efforts,
including the UC Riverside Anderson School of Management, the California Museum of Photography, and the Center for Environmental
Research & Technology. He passed away in 2016.
This collection contains scrapbooks from Jack Yeager on efforts to pass Proposition 1 (University Of California Health Science
Facilities) and Proposition 7 (Interest Rate on State Bonds), which were ballot measures on the June 2, 1970 California state
ballot. Items in the scrapbooks focus mostly on materials from citizen committees formed to support the propositions, including
organizing efforts, campaigning materials, news clippings, and photographs.
The collection is arranged topically.
