Abstract: Charles Frank Stern (1879-1960) was a member of the California Highway Commission (1914-18), and later served as the Superintendent of Banks (1918-20), the vice president of the First National Bank of Los Angeles. He was also a partner with Ed Fletcher in the Cuyamaca Water Company in San Diego. The collection consists of Stern's correspondence, manuscripts, clippings, and related printed material.

Biography

Stern was born in 1879 in Arcata, California; he became a member of the California Highway Commission, helping to organize the drive for the use of convict labor on the highways, 1914-18; he served as Superintendent of Banks, 1918-20; became vice president of the First National Bank of Los Angeles; became a partner with Ed Fletcher in the Cuyamaca Water Company in San Diego; was a friend of Hiram Johnson and William Stephens; he died on May 10, 1960.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, clippings, and related printed material of Charles F. Stern concerning his career as a member of the California State Highway Commission, Superintendent of Banks, Vice President of the First National Bank of Los Angeles and co-owner of the Cuyamaca Water Company, San Diego.
