Divided into two sub-series: Research Files, which has been further divided into Indices, Notes and Summaries; China Reports; and Subject and People Files; and, Attorney Files.

Scope and Content Note

In 1950, when the Amerasia case resurfaced with McCarthy's charges, Service gathered a wide range of materials to construct his defense. Detailed indices, a chronology, lists of documents, notes on his reports, and excerpts from earlier memos were either created or assembled by Service. Copies of his China reports and U.S. Embassy despatches were assembled from a variety of sources. Field reports that had been returned to Service by the FBI in 1945 are also included here. Some years later, following the U.S. Senate Internal Security Subcommittee's 1970 publication of The Amerasia Papers... with an introduction by Dr. Anthony Kubek, Service created files for topics and individuals to sort information relevant to the cases, and into these he added his own summaries and working notes, as well as correspondence, official reports, and newspaper and magazine clippings. Classified documents found in the collection were sent to the State Department for review; all were declassified and returned, and have been integrated into this series. Entire files that were sent have been stamped with the applicable declassification code; folders used when only a portion of the file contents were classified and sent for review have also been retained in the collection, since they too bear the applicable declassification stamps. These retain the original folder number with an added designation of "a" and are filed immediately after the folder in which the documents were originally filed.
