Organizational History
The Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (CNLM) was founded in 1981, with the express purpose of conducting
research toward a greater understanding of the biological basis of learning and memory. The CNLM was officially sanctioned
as an Organized Research Unit (ORU) by the University of California in 1983. Like all University of California ORUs, the CNLM
is interdisciplinary in its approach to research. Faculty members, along with professional, postgraduate, graduate, and undergraduate
researchers come from a variety of disciplines, including psychology, chemistry, anatomy, pharmacology, work together on research
teams aimed at understanding the connection between human memory and learning. Besides being interdisciplinary, the CNLM also
includes faculty members from other universities in southern California.
The CNLM was founded by UCI faculty members James L. McGaugh and Norman M. Weinberger of School of Biological Sciences. Dr.
McGaugh has been the director of the center from its inception. As an ORU, the CNLM is organizationally connected to the Office
of Research and Graduate Studies.
