Abstract: Madeline Gleason (1913- ) was a poet, playwright, and painter. She founded the San Francisco Poetry Guild, organized the first
poetry festival in America (1947), and taught master workshop in poetry at the Poetry Center, San Francisco State College
(1959-60). The collection consists of Gleason's literary papers, correspondence, clippings, and ephemera.

Biography
Gleason was born January 26, 1913; although employed by a brokerage firm (1944-68), she was a poet, playwright, and painter;
founder of San Francisco Poetry Guild; organized the first poetry festival in America (1947); taught master workshop in poetry
at the Poetry Center, San Francisco State College (1959-60); her published works include
The metaphysical needle (1949),
Concerto for bell and telephone (1957) and contributions to various anthology publications.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of literary papers, correspondence, clippings, and ephemera related to the poet Madeline Gleason. Includes
letters from James Broughton, Josephine Miles, Janet Winters, and others, as well as one letter from Walter de la Mare; correspondence
regarding the Poetry Center in San Francisco; and ephemera from poetry readings primarily in San Francisco. Also includes
two hand-painted pictures by Gleason.
