Series Scope and Content Summary

This series contains the organizational records of the Empire Mine created from 1866 until the 1950s, both prior to and after the establishment of Empire Star Mines Company, Ltd. The bulk of the records are from 1900-1935.
Subseries 4.5, personal papers of Robert H. Svendsen, includes diamond drilling reports from Empire Mine during the 1970s; and Series 5, photographic material, contains photographs of Empire Mine, including equipment, staff, and the blacksmith shop.
This series is arranged into six subseries:

Subseries 3.19.  North Star Mine and North Star Mining Company, 1887-1951 and undated.

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

This subseries contains accounting, administrative, employee, and mining records of the North Star Mine and North Star Mining Company. North Star mine was first discovered by two Frenchmen in 1851 and ultimately became one of the three largest producers of gold in Grass Valley, California. In 1867 the North Star Gold Mining Co. was incorporated and in 1875, along with various nearby claims the North Star claim was patented. That same year, the mine closed. The mine was reopened by William Bourn, Jr., in 1884 who then sold it to J. D. Hague and associates in 1887. In 1887 the North Star Mining Co. was incorporated and took over the property of the North Star Gold Mining Co. In 1899 the North Star Mines Co. was incorporated to take over the North Star Mining Co. and to furnish the funds necessary for expansion. The mine's primary veins include A (a.k.a., Alioth), New York Hill, Y, and Z.
As of May 1, 1929, Empire Star Mines Co., Ltd., owned and operated North Star Mines Company. Records in this subseries also include those of Champion Mine, which was purchased by North Star Mines Company in 1911.
Subseries 1.4, Empire Mine legal records, includes records from the 1908-1914 suit of North Star Mine vs. Empire Mine for trespass; Subseries 4.5, personal papers of Robert H. This subseries contains mining records of Pennsylvania Mine. Located near Grass Valley, the mine was in active operation by 1867. Subseries 4.1.  William Bourn, Jr., 1902-1928.

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

This small subseries primarily contains correspondence of William Bourn, Jr., and annual reports of the Pacific Union Club and San Francisco Gas and Electric Company.
Cousin of George W. Starr, William Bourn, Jr. was 21 when he took over the Empire Mining Company, reorganized the company, and formed the Original Empire Mill and Mining Company in 1879. After realizing the high profitability of the Empire Mine, Bourn purchased the North Star Mine in 1884. Three years later he sold North Star to James D. Hague and in 1888 he sold controlling interest in the Empire Mine to Hague as well. In subsequent years he occupied his time in various business activities such as serving as the director of the San Francisco Gas and Electric Company and constructing what would later be know as the Christian Brothers Winery in St. Helena. Then in 1896 he repurchased majority interest in Empire Mine. He was also a member (and president in 1907) of the Pacific Union Club.
Bourn sold Empire Mine on May 1, 1929 to Newmont Mining Corporation. He died in 1936 at the age of 79.

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

This subseries includes correspondence, the patent application for the "Keast Drill," equipment records, and field notes from a mine visit. Phil Keast was an electrical engineer and worked at Empire Mine for 40 years. He was the Master Mechanic and in charge of the Empire machine shop. Keast worked at the mine until 1957 when he assisted with its closure.
Subseries 7.2, vendor correspondence, contains correspondence to Phil Keast and Empire Mine regarding the introduction of new products and answers to equipment queries; Series 5, Photographic Material, contains images of Phil Keast at Empire Mine from 1942 and 1988; and Subseries 2.2, Empire Mine administrative records, contains correspondence of Phil Keast, 1949-1950 and undated.

Subseries 4.4.  George W. Starr, 1883-1931 and undated.

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

This subseries primarily contains financial material and correspondence of George W. Starr. Hired as a mucker at Empire Mine at the age of 19, he was employed by his cousin William Bourn, Jr. After six years, in 1887, Starr was appointed superintendent of the Empire Mine and greatly contributed to the success of the mine in subsequent years by improving operations. For example, he introduced compressed air drills in 1890, which increased the rate of development of the mine.
In 1893, Starr traveled to South Africa to manage gold mines. He returned to California in 1898. Upon his return, Empire Mine saw continued success and progress under his management. Starr retired from Empire Mine in 1929. He died in 1940 at the age of 77.
