Scope and Contents note
This subseries contains a variety of material collected by Vander Poel dealing generally with the art and archaeology of Italy,
but not
specifically with the area of Campania. Of particular interest is the material relating to Vander Poel's participation in
the excavations at
Gravina in Apulia and a collection of early maps of Italy.
Excavations at Gravina,
1966-1969
Scope and Contents note
In the spring of 1967, Vander Poel and M. A. Cotton conducted a short excavation as part of the larger British and American
excavations at
Botromagno near Gravina. They excavated a field containing a necropolis that had been the scene of tomb-robbing. Their mission
was to get data
on the cemetery and determine its relation to the residential area that lay to the north. See also Box 587.

General Italian art, archaeology and history,
circa 1730-1996
Scope and Contents note
A wide range of materials relating to the art and archaeology of Italy form this section of the archive. The bulk of the material
falls into
two groups: that related to the archaeology of areas of Italy other than Campania, and that related to Vander Poel's interest
in various
churches in Rome and the work of Professor Pico Cellini on fresco restoration. Of particular interest is a set of clippings
on Italian
archaeology, the core of which may have been assembled by Della Corte.
Set of clippings related to the archaeology of Italy,
1850-1976, bulk 1929-1938
Scope and Contents note
This set of clippings covers the general archaeology of Italy including Campania. The core of the set may have been assembled
by Matteo Della
Corte, but Vander Poel made added both earlier and later material.
