Acquisition Information

The planning brochures and related documents were transferred to the Archives by the Office of Planning in conjunction with the County Photographer's Collection. The issues of info were transferred to the Archives by the Public Health Department.

Processing Information

This collection was processed by Michael Griffith working under NHPRC grant RA-10047-07, the Santa Clara County Archives Project. A fuller account of the grant project is available at the Archives website. The planning brochures and related documents were placed in chronological order. The copies of info were placed in chronological order, duplicates discarded, and the remaining issues foldered by year.

Administrative History

The Planning Office is a division of the Department of Planning and Development of the County of Santa Clara. The Planning Office's main role is to plan and regulate land use and development in unincorporated Santa Clara County. The office's duties include: maintaining general plan and zoning ordinances, implementing planning studies, reviewing zoning and development applications, and monitoring major building projects.

Series Scope and Content Summary

This series consists of County plans created and/or published by the Office of Planning from 1942 to 1986. The publications encompass a wide variety of plans as well as more general discussions of planning issues. They include several plans for parks, various elements of the County's general plan, and maps of incorporated areas at various dates. Also included are a City of San Jose publication, Goals for San Jose, one issue of the Office of Planning newsletter, documents prepared for a 1977 conference, and a bikeways guide for 1982.
