Background
Dearing was born on July 30, 1920 in San Francisco, California; AB (1940), AM (1942), and Ph.D (1949), Harvard University; from instructor to associate professor of English literature (1949-63), then professor of English and Computer Applications in Literature, UCLA; in 1954 became co-editor of The Works of John Dryden; publications include A manual of textual analysis (1959), Prelimdi: a computer program for making preliminary diagrams in textual criticism (1974), Principles and practice of textual analysis (1974), and Poetry and prose of John Gay (editor, 1974).
