The papers were purchased from Mrs. Margaret (Gaffey) Mel in February 1954.

Scope and Content

John Tracy Gaffey was born in Ireland in 1859. He came to San Francisco about 1867 and moved to Los Angeles in 1882. He served as collector of customs, supreme court clerk and member of the city council. He was also active in numerous civic and political organizations including the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee, Federated Tax Reduction Leagues of Los Angeles County, and the Free Harbor League. His business interests included mining investments in Mexico, Texas oil, and real estate holdings.
