Biographical/Historical note
Milton Friedman (July 31, 1912 — November 16, 2006) was an American economist, statistician, and a recipient of the Nobel
Memorial Prize in Economics. He is best known among scholars for his theoretical and empirical research, especially consumption
analysis, monetary history and theory, and for his demonstration of the complexity of stabilization policy. He was an economic
advisor to U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Over time, many governments practiced his restatement of a political philosophy that
extolled the virtues of a free market economic system with little intervention by government. Friedman's political philosophy,
which he considered classically liberal and libertarian, emphasized the advantages of free market economics and the disadvantages
of government intervention and regulation. Friedman's many books, scholarly articles, magazine columns, television programs,
videos and lectures cover a broad range of topics of microeconomics, macroeconomics, economic history, and public policy issues.
Rose Director Friedman (December, 1910 or 1911 — August 18, 2009) was the wife of Milton Friedman. With her husband, she co-wrote
two books on economics and public policy, Free to Choose and Tyranny of the Status Quo. She also co-wrote their memoirs Milton
and Rose D. Friedman, Two Lucky People, which appeared in 1998. Together they founded the Milton and Rose D. Friedman Foundation,
with the aim of promoting the use of school vouchers and freedom of choice in education. She also helped produce the PBS television
series, Free to Choose.

Scope and Contents note
The Milton Friedman collection features various awards and certificates for Friedman's contributions to economics and government
policy. Among the collection is his Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics which he earned in 1976 "for his achievements in the
fields of consumption analysis, monetary history and theory, and for his demonstration of the complexity of stabilization
policy." Numerous honorary degrees and doctoral hoods are also included, as well as his 1946 doctoral diploma from Columbia
University. Another noted item is a handwritten manuscript of Friedman's 1950 journal article titled "Wesley C. Mitchell as
an Economic theorist." The Doctor of Laws diploma from Pepperdine University and doctoral hood earned by his wife, Rose Friedman,
are also contained. In addition, the collection holds obituraries for both Milton and Rose Friedman.
