Series 1. Newspapers

Scope and Content Note

The Newspapers series contains longer runs of better known community newspapers as well as individual issues of smaller publications. The main newspapers represented in the collection are Gidra , Asian American Political Alliance, Red Guard Community News, Getting Together, and Wei Min. The collection does not contain complete runs of these newspapers.
Box 1 of newspapers contains Asian American Political Alliance, Gidra and miscellaneous publications organized alphabetically and chronologically. Box 2 and Box 9 contain Getting Together and Wei Min organized chronologically, respectively.
Steve Louie created a subject index to guide users through the newspapers. The index categories are as follows: campus struggles for Asian American Studies, anti-Vietnam War / struggles against imperialism, International Hotel / struggle against community destruction, labor struggles, Asian American women: the woman's question, U.S.-China Peoples' Friendship, Asian American organizations, international situation, resources for Asian American Studies, and polemics.
The Campus Struggles for Asian American Studies category refers to articles on college campuses' struggle for Ethnic Studies, high school organizing against repression and for curricular reform, and community organizing around busing, bilingual education and curriculum reform.
The Anti-Vietnam War / Struggle against Imperialism category refers to articles on anti-war actions and the U.S.' political involvement with Vietnam.
The Labor Struggles category refers to articles on the labor history of Asian Americans, organizing within the garment industry, restaurants and the U.S. Postal Service.
The Asian American Women: The Woman's Question category refers to articles written on sexism within the movement and Asian American community.
The U.S.-China Peoples' Friendship category refers to articles on meetings between Americans and visiting Chinese through the U.S.-China Peoples' Friendship Association.
The Asian American Organizations category refers to articles relating to the Wei Min She of the San Francisco Chinatown, the Asian American Political Alliance and Third World Liberation Front at UC Berkeley, the Asian American Political Alliance at San Francisco State College, the Asian Americans for Action of New York City and I Wor Kuen of New York and San Francisco's Chinatown.
The International Situation category refers to articles on world politics outside of Asia.
The Resources for Asian American Studies category refers to articles with themes of identity, history, interethnic solidarity, arts and culture, and model minority stereotype of Asian Americans.
The Polemics category relates to articles on the political differences between organizations.

Asian American Political Alliance was first published in 1968 at UC Berkeley by the group of the same name. The newspaper was published irregularly and primarily served as an organizing tool for the establishment of Asian American Studies and Ethnic Studies. The newspaper also featured issues of community and international interest as they were seen as being relevant and integral to Asian American Studies.

One of the most well-known Asian American movement newspapers and was first published in 1969. Students organizing for Asian American Studies at UCLA started the newspaper, but it soon evolved into a newspaper for the wider Asian American community in Los Angeles. The newspaper was published monthly and in English only; its main readership consisted of youth. The newspaper's namesake was Ghidra, a monster in Japanese cinema.

Scope and Content Note

The Subject Files series complement the information covered in the newspapers. They contain additional information related to Asian American organizations, such as Asian Americans for Action (New York City), Wei Min She (San Francisco), Japanese American Committee for Democracy (New York City), Asian American Political Alliance (UC Berkeley), Asian American Concern (UC Davis), U.S.-Chinese Peoples' Friendship Association (San Francisco), and other student groups at the high school and university level across California and on the east coast. The subject files also include materials related to anti-Vietnam War efforts, the International Hotel, curriculum materials and the establishment of Asian American Studies and centers in colleges and universities across the U.S., Asian American conferences, and postal workers' organizing.

Scope and Content Note

The Buttons series contains buttons related to organizing struggles such as International Workers' Day, International Women's Day, United Farmworkers' "Boycott Grapes" campaign, anti-war efforts, anti-eviction actions, anti-racism protests, postal workers' unions, and sovereignty movements (Okinawa and Puerto Rico). Three are related to political figures — President John F. Kennedy, Presidential candidate George Wallace, and Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley. The buttons are arranged in the order in which they were received by the collector Steve Louie.
