Abstract: Conference materials, minutes, correspondence,
amicus curiae briefs, and other documents relating to the provision of legal
representation for lesbians and gays, created and collected by Los Angeles
lawyer William E. Weinberger, a member of several organizations that provided
legal services to lesbians and gays, in the course of his work.

Biography
William E. Weinberger has practiced law in the areas of business
litigation, real estate, litigation, appeals, professional liability, first
amendment law, employment law, and governmental relations.
He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 16, 1955. He graduated cum laude
from Cornell University in 1977, and earned his Juris Doctor from Stanford
University in 1981. While at Stanford he was Senior Editor of the Stanford
Journal of International Law, 1978-1981, and Associate Editor of the Stanford
Law Review, 1979-1981. His "Congressional Access to Grand Jury Transcripts" was
published in the November 1980 issue of the Stanford Law Review. From
1981-1982, he clerked for Frank J. Battisti, Chief Judge, U.S. District Court,
Northern District of Ohio. In 1982, he was admitted to the California bar and
joined the Los Angeles Lesbian and Gay Law Association, where he served as the
association president in 1987. He joined the National Lesbian & Gay Law
Association in 1988, and co-chaired the association, 1993-1994. From 1991 to
1996, he served as Judge Pro-Tem, Beverly Hills Municipal Court. A member of
the Los Angeles County, California, and American Bar Associations, he served on
the State Bar of California Committee on Administration of Justice, 1994-1997.
In 1997 he was elected Los Angeles Charter Reform Commissioner, and served
until 1999. In April 2000, the Los Angeles Lawyer printed his article,
"Workers' Compensation Liability for Production Companies." From 1999 to 2001,
he was a member of the City of Los Angeles Board of Neighborhood Commissioners,
and served as its President, 2000-2001. In 2002, he joined the California Law
Revision Commission, and served as the Chair, 2004-2005.

Scope and Content of Collection
The collection consists of the papers of William E. Weinberger
documenting his involvement between 1983 and 1998 with Lawyers for Human Rights
(LHR), National Gay Rights Advocates (NGRA), the National Lesbian and Gay Law
Association's Lavender Law conferences, and similar organizations to secure
equal rights for lesbians and gays. The collection also contains reference
materials such as amicus curiae briefs, clippings, correspondence, judgments,
memoranda, newsletters, notes, opinions, and reports regarding legal issues of
concern to gays and lesbians.

Arranged in five series: (1) Lawyers for Human Rights, (2) National Gay
Rights Advocates, (3) Lavender Law: The National Conference on Lesbian and Gay
Legal Issues, (4) Other Organization and Conference Materials, and (5)
Reference Materials. The folders within each series are arranged
chronologically.
