Background
The Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS) is an organized research unit of the University of California focused on interdisciplinary
research on topics related to contemporary transportation. The headquarters and library of ITS are housed at the University
of California, Berkeley; branches are located at the Davis, Irvine, and Los Angeles campuses. ITS was founded at UC Berkeley
in 1948 by the California State Legislature in response to the deferred maintenance of transportation facilities during World
War II. The first branch was established at Irvine in 1974, originally under the name the Institute of Transportation and
Traffic Engineering.
