Biography/History

Robert R. Sonnenschein was a Professor of Physiology at UCLA. This collection was donated in his honor in 1966 by his mother, Mrs. Robert Sonnenschein. Mrs. Sonnenschein was a bookplate collector whose collection includes many Southern California bookplates as well as bookplates from around the world.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of bookplates from the United States, Europe, Australia, and Japan, as well as books and monographs related to bookplates. Artists represented in the collection include Rockwell Kent, Gordon Craig, Aubrey Beardsley, Maxfield Parrish, Howard Pyle, and Rene Lalique. There are also original proof plates by John W. Jameson, Ainslee Hewlett, and William Edgar Fisher. Notable books include Later Bookplates & Marks (1937) by Rockwell Kent, Nothing, or the Bookplate by Gordon Craig, Book-Plates of Well-Known Americans (1911) by Clifford N. Carver, Last Bookplates (1929) by James Guthrie, and The Rise of the Book-Plate (1901) by W.G. Bowdoin.
