Biographical and Historical Note
William Andrews Clark, Jr. was born in Deer Lodge, Montana in 1877, the youngest son of copper baron William Andrews Clark,
Sr. (1839-1925) and Katherine Stauffer Clark (1844-1893). Clark, Jr. (or WAC Jr.) attended schools in France and New York,
and graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor's Degree in Law in 1899. He then returned to Butte, Montana,
where he worked as a partner in the law firm Roote and Clark, and also served on the boards of several mining and industrial
concerns.
In 1902, he married Mabel Duffield Foster (1881-1903), who had grown up in Butte just down the street from the Clark residence.
Mabel died of sepsis following the birth of their son, William Andrews Clark, III ("Tertius"), in 1903. In 1907, Clark married
Alice Genevieve McManus Medin (1884-1918), a recent divorcee originally from Virginia City, Nevada, and they moved from Butte
to Los Angeles in the early 1910s. Their house at Adams Boulevard and Cimarron Street occupied the grounds that the Clark
Library still stands on today. Though Clark would continue to be involved in the Elm Orlu Mine and Timber Butter Milling Company,
among other mining businesses until his death, he does not appear to have worked actively as a lawyer after his move to Los
Angeles. Alice McManus Clark died at the Clark residence in Los Angeles in November 1918. Clark never remarried, and soon
after Alice's death, met his long-time partner, Harrison Post.
Around the time of his move to LA, WAC Jr. began collecting antiquarian and fine press books as a serious hobby (he had dabbled
in book buying previous to this). In 1919, he hired bibliographer Robert E. Cowan to consult on collection-building and the
compilation of a printed library catalog. The first volume of this was printed in 1920 by San Francisco printer John Henry
Nash, and many other volumes, dedicated to different portions of the collection, would be issued over time, all printed by
Nash.
After a small kitchen fire in his home around 1924, Clark decided he needed a separate, fireproof library building and hired
architect Robert David Farquhar to design the present library building, with interior decoration by Harrison Post. Upon completion
in 1926, Clark promised the library and grounds to UCLA after his death. When Clark died in Montana in 1934, the Clark Library
became a part of UCLA.
In addition to Robert E. Cowan, who worked at the Library until 1932, Cora Edgerton Sanders and Harrison Post both did significant
work in the building, cataloging, and maintenance of the Clark Library's collections. Sanders in particular served as a librarian
and curator at the Clark Library until 1943, and was responsible for much of the library's record-keeping and bibliographic
correspondence.

Processing History
After many decades of use and many different organizational systems imposed by various staff members, this collection was
formally processed and this finding aid written by Rebecca Fenning Marschall in 2011-2012.
Major revisions to the biographical notes and other contextual information in this finding aid were made by Rebecca Fenning
Marschall in August 2022 in order to better represent the lives of Cora Sanders, Alice McManus Clark, Mabel Duffield Clark,
and Harrison Post, and to bring descriptions in line with ethical cataloging best practices.

Scope and Contents
This collection consists of the personal archive of William Andrews Clark, Jr. and the institutional archive of the William
Andrews Clark Memorial Library up to 1934 (when Clark, Jr. died and the library became part of UCLA). In addition to primary
source materials, this collection also includes secondary sources and other materials related to Clark, his family and close
associates, and the library itself. The collection comprises correspondence, invoices, photographs, ephemera, official reports,
press clippings, and artifacts, dating from 1878 to 2022. Most of the materials collected here are records relating to collection
development, bibliography, maintenance, and construction of the Clark Library. There are also significant materials related
to the published catalogs and specially printed Christmas gift books printed by John Henry Nash and circulated by Clark, Jr.
Most of WAC Jr.'s personal papers and effects no longer exist and are presumed destroyed. Similarly, the Clark Library does
not possess any primary source material related to WAC Jr.'s first wife, Mabel Duffield Foster, and very little paper-based
primary source material related to his second wife, Alice G. McManus, or his father, William Andrews Clark, Sr. The Clark
Library recognizes that these archival silences exist and currently (2022) seeks to redress these issues through collecting
non-paper-based materials and secondary sources related to the Clark family and their close associates, particularly Harrison
Post and Cora Sanders. Please see the Related Materials section for links to separate finding aids describing other relevant
collections at the Clark Library.
Large sections of the collection are what is termed an "artificial collection," a set of materials accumulated over time by
an archival institution, as opposed to a collection that is donated en masse to a library as a discrete unit. As such, this
collection will continue to grow over time, even though it is dedicated to the Pre-1934 history of the Clark Library and its
founder.
Publication Rights
The Clark Library owns the property rights to its collections but does not hold the copyright to these materials and therefore
cannot grant or deny permission to use them. Researchers are responsible for determining the copyright status of any materials
they may wish to use, investigating the owner of the copyright, and obtaining permission for their intended publication or
other use. In all cases, you must cite the Clark Library as the source with the following credit line: The William Andrews

Biographical / Historical
William Andrews Clark, Sr. was born in 1839 in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, and later lived in Iowa, where he taught school
and studied law at Iowa Wesleyan College. During the Montana gold rush in the 1860s, he headed west where he first tried placer
mining, and then chose to become a trader, provisioning miners across the state. He later opened a bank in Deer Lodge, Montana
and made a fortune through reposessing mining claims when their owners defaulted on their bank loans. As he accumulated more
mining holdings in Montana, particularly in Butte, he chose to enroll for a year of study at the Columbia University School
of Mines. In addition to operating mines and smelters, Clark also diversified into railroads (including the San Pedro, Los
Angeles, and Salt Lake Railroad), newspapers, and lumber, in addition to the Los Alamitos Sugar Corporation in Los Angeles
and United Verde copper mine in Arizona. Clark served one term as a US Senator from Montana from 1901-1907, though the bribery
scheme that bought him his seat colored much of his time in office. After leaving the Senate, Clark largely lived in New York
City, where he accumulated a large collection of French art.
Clark's first wife, Katherine Stauffer, was also born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, and after the births of their seven
children, lived the majority of the rest of her life in France. She died in 1893. Clark's second wife, Anna Eugenia La Chapelle
(1878-1963) had been a teenager in Butte when she met Clark, and he paid for her to study music in Europe. Their two daughters,
Andree (1902-1919) and Huguette (1906-2011), were both born in Europe and largely raised in New York City.
Clark Sr. died in New York City in 1925.

Biographical Note
WAC Jr.'s son, William Andrews Clark, III ("Tertius") was born in Butte, Montana in 1903. He was a mining engineer and a technology
enthusiast, interested in both still and moving photography as well as flight. He was killed in a plane crash in 1932, while
learning to fly "blind" – with only instruments and a hooded cockpit. He was survived by his wife, Thelma Wyatt Clark, a stepdaughter,
Audrey Johnson, and William Wyatt Clark, a young son listed in Tertius's obituaries as "being considered for adoption" by
the family.

Alice G. McManus Clark (1884-1918) Subgroup 2.
ca. 1907-1918
Biographical Note
Alice Genevieve McManus, was born July 22, 1882 in Virginia City, Nevada (some records give Alice's birthdate as 1884, but
based on the 1900 census and her 1902 marriage record, 1882 or 1883 appear to be more accurate) to Catherine Hayes McManus
and Andrew McManus. By 1896, Alice was already publicly recognized for her beauty and poise: Nevada newspapers from the time
record her election by a poll of students as a "Venus." By 1902, Alice was 19 years old and living in Butte, Montana where
she worked as a telephone operator. In that year, she eloped in Butte with divorcé and fellow Virginia City native Marco J.
Medin. Marco was a successful merchant in Butte and Alice quickly became a popular figure in Butte social life, as evidence
by the frequent mentions of her and her clothing in Butte-area newspapers. After a November 1906 divorce from Marco, Alice
and William Andrews Clark, Jr. were married May 1907 in Butte at the home of one of Alice's good friend, Grace McStay Carnochan.
The Clarks moved to Los Angeles in 1908, and in 1910, purchased of what was then called the McCan estate at 2205 West Adams
Boulevard - the same parcel the Clark Library occupies today. In addition to becoming socially active in Los Angeles, Alice
also became involved in charity work in the city, especially at the YWCA, and throughout World War I, she was deeply involved
in Red Cross fundraising and other efforts related to child refugees. Alice McManus Clark died November 17, 1918, at the age
of 34, after being diagnosed with colon cancer 8 months earlier.
Scope and Contents
Items described here include photographs of Alice McManus Clark. Some incoming correspondence is also filed in the Correspondence

Cora Edgerton Sanders (1872-1964) Subgroup 1.
1880-1947
Biographical Note
Cora Sanders was born in Helena, Montana in 1872 to Junius G. Sanders and Alfaretta Rumley Sanders. As a child, she went by
Cora Belle Sanders, but as an adult, she changed her middle name to Edgerton. Her father's family was prominent in Montana
politics (her uncle Wilbur Fisk Sanders and great-uncle Sidney Edgerton both served as governors), and her father was a Civil
War and Spanish-American War veteran, who worked as a merchant, an army paymaster, and a federal marshal at various points
in his life. Cora was one of 6 female graduates in the Helena High School class of 1891, and did further study in Germany
from 1891-1893. She worked as a school teacher in various small towns in Montana, and moved to Butte around 1898, where she
was in the same social circles as William Andrews Clark, Jr. and his brother C.W. Clark. In 1910, Sanders moved to Los Angeles
with the Clarks as the governess to William Andrews Clark, III, and after Tertius was sent to boarding school on the east
coast, it appears Cora continued to work for and travel with the Clarks as a secretary. In the 1920s, Cora took on increasing
responsibility as an assistant librarian for Clark's collection. Her niece, Adelyn Sutphen, also worked at the library, and
her sister Ellen Sanders Sutphen worked as a secretary to the Los Angeles Philharmonic. After William Andrews Clark, Jr.'s
death, Sanders remained the curator of the Clark Library until 1943. She died in 1964 in Long Beach, California.

Harrison Post (ca. 1896-1946) Subgroup 3.
1920-1949
Biographical Note
Harrison Post was born Albert Weis Harrison likely in New York in about 1897, and had a somewhat itinerant childhood, both
before and after his parents separated when he was a small child. He spent his teenage years largely in the Sacramento, California
area with his father. By 1919, he was going by the name Harrison Post and was working at Marsh & Company in San Francisco,
where he met William Andrews Clark, Jr. who had come into the store as a customer. Post soon moved to Los Angeles to be with
Clark, and later worked at the library as an assistant librarian, in addition to decorating the interiors of the library and
Clark residence. By the 1930s, Clark and Post's romance had cooled but they remained close friends, and at Clark's death,
Post inherited a substantial amount of money. Post was incapacitated by a long illness at the time of Clark's death and nearly
all of his money and possessions were liquidated by his sister Gladys, who took conservatorship over him. In 1938, Post traveled
to Norway with a former nurse and was later interned in a POW camp during World War II. At the end of the war, he returned
to the US and died in San Francisco in 1946.

George John Palé (1916-1973) Subgroup 4.
1934
Biographical / Historical
George John Palé was born March 11, 1916 in San Francisco, to Martha Fauré and Paul Palé. Martha had immigrated to the US
in 1909 from France, and Paul was the California-born son of French immigrants. After they divorced in 1925, Martha began
working as a housekeeper for William Andrews Clark, Jr. in Los Angeles. Clark provided for George's upbringing, including
violin lessons and enrollment in St. John's Military Academy. At Clark's death in 1934, attorney's alleged Clark was in the
process of adopting the teenager (there is no extant evidence that this was actually the case), and George, at 18 years old,
was the beneficiary of the largest amount from the Clark estate.
George and his first wife, Helen Bajus, met at a party given by Clark for the members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and
their families. George attended as one of Clark's guests, while Helen attended with her father, who was a trombonist in the
orchestra. They married in 1935 and had 5 children: Joan, Nancy, Clark, Ronald, and Susan.
During World War II, Palé served in the US Army in the South Pacific, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel. After the
war, he returned to Los Angeles, and owned several different businesses.
He divorced Helen in 1949 and moved with their 5 children to Maricopa County, Arizona, where he focused on agriculture, growing
cotton and later, citrus. He married his second wife, Edna Nasser Palé soon after his divorce, and together, they had another
daughter, Teresa. Palé served as a State Representative for Maricopa County from 1966 to 1970 and was responsible for introducting
a bill to make the Bola tie the official Arizona state neckwear (this bill passed in 1971). He was also instrumental in a
law called "The Pink Cadillac Tax," which imposed additional taxes on cars and luxury items purchased in other states by Arizona
residents.
George John Palé died in Arizona on April 12, 1973, at the age of 57.
