Scope and Content of Collection
The archive consists of twenty-seven drawings and plans by the architects Gottfried Semper (1803-1879) and Carl von Hasenauer
(1833-1894), who were responsible for designing the imperial court theaters, now known as Burgtheater, in Austria, Vienna.
The architectural drawings are for a building that was used as a depot or storage area for the stage sets utilized in the
court theaters. Included are designs for the building's façade and drawings detailing technical aspects such as roof trusses
and pulleys.
Most drawings are dated and signed by the architects; some drawings are signed by engineers. Three drawings are signed by
both Semper and Hasenauer, 20 are signed by Hasenauer only, and five are signed by Josef Gridl (including four with Hasenauer).
Biographical / Historical Note
Gottfried Semper (1803-1879), who was born in Hamburg, Germany, studied both in Germany and France, traveled for three years
to Italy and Greece, and worked as an architect and teacher in Germany, England, Switzerland, and Austria. He designed the
Dresden Opera House and contributed to the re-design of the Ringstrasse in Vienna. His publication,
Die fier Elemente der Baukunst (The Four Elements of Architecture) (1851) remains a canonical text of the 19th century. He is also known for the theoretical work
Der Stil in den technischen und tektonischen Künsten oder praktische Aesthetik (Style in the Industrial and Structural Arts,
or Practical Aesthetics)
(1860-1863). He participated in some of the major architectural debates of his day, including that surrounding the use of
polychrome decoration in ancient Greek buildings.
Carl Freiherr von Hasenauer (1833-1894), also known as Karl von Hasenauer, was an Austrian architect and a key representative
of historicist architecture. He was a student of Eduard van der Nüll (1812-1868) and August Siccard von Siccardsburg (1813-1869).
He built several residential buildings such as the Lützow Palace in Vienna and received from Emperor Francis-Joseph the commission
to design Hermesvilla in Lainz.
Gottfried Semper and Carl Hasenauer participated in the design of one of the most important projects in 19th-century Vienna:
the Ringstrasse, and particularly the Kaiserforum. When Semper's plan for the imperial forum or Kaiserforum was approved by
Emperor Francis-Joseph of Austria, Hasenauer was appointed as Semper's assistant. They worked together on several monumental
projects, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Naturhistorisches Museum, the Burgtheater, and the Neue Hofburg, which was completed
in 1913.
