Abstract: For nearly a century Los Angeles has played a major role in the development of Gospel music. In order to document this history and raise awareness about Los Angeles' role as a center for contemporary Gospel, the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive and the Heritage Music Foundation propose Gospel Archiving in Los Angeles, or GALA. This yearlong project focuses on helping HMF develop a strategic plan; expanding Los Angeles Gospel and related music collections in the Archive and at HMF; digitizing and increasing access to Gospel collections held by HMF and others in the Los Angeles Gospel community; hosting an end-of-the-project symposium at UCLA; and establishing and maintaining a CBO Internet server that will allow community members to both access and upload digital copies of recordings while situated outside of the Archiveï½s walls. With the realization of all the goals, and with the establishment of our CBO Internet server in particular, the Archive will facilitate and sustain real and virtual networks of partnerships between the Ethnomusicology Archive, HMF, and other community partners.
