Abstract: Lorraine Miller Sherer (1898-1985) was the superintendent of elementary education for Los Angeles County and a specialist
in early childhood development at the UCLA School of Education. After her retirement, Sherer began compiling the first history
of the Mohave people of California and Arizona. The collection consists of research materials on Mohave Indian culture and
history from the early Spanish period to 1976. Included is a large collection of books and articles, manuscripts, maps, tape
recordings and notes.

Born June 25, 1898 in Missouri; graduated in 1918 from Los Angeles Normal School with diploma in education; became superintendant
of elementary education for Los Angeles County after teaching in Long Beach and serving as principal in South Santa Anita
school; specialist in early childhood development at UCLA School of Education; longtime friend of Mohave nation, Sherer dedicated
her retirement to compiling the first history of the Mohave people of California and Arizona; died March 16, 1985.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of research materials on Mohave Indian culture and history from the early Spanish period to 1976, which
relates to Sherer's work on Mohave ethno-history and language. Includes large collection of books and articles as well as
manuscripts, maps, tape recordings and notes.
