Organizational History
From the beginning, women have served our nation in the military and continue to do so in ever increasing numbers. Although
all forms of recognition provided by a grateful citizenry have always been open equally to women veterans, they remain historically
under represented in using the benefits offered to them and seem more reluctant to embrace their status as veterans than their
male counterparts.
To honor the Women Veterans of Santa Cruz County, the Mid-County Senior Center was held a formal tea in November 1994. The
tea was met with enthusiam and so additional November teas were held in 1995 and 1996. Thanks to the Santa Cruz Sentinel's
advance coverage of the 1996 event, attendance exceeded expectations and the enthusiastic attendees wished to meet more often.
From 1997-2004 the group met quarterly and more formally. The name "Women Veterans and Civilian Support of Santa Cruz County
was formally accepted during this period.
The term "Civilian Support" denotes those women who served in defense support capacities, either during a conflict or currently
during peace time. Some catagories are: Air raid wardens, defense workers, ferry pilots, nurses, Red Cross workers, shipyards
workers, hospital staff, "Rosie the Riveter", and USO workers. These women, especially during WWII, took over traditionally
held male jobs in order that the men could "Go off to war" and defend the country. They sacrificed time with their families
and their own pursuits in order to better the war effort.
The organization ended in 2004 due to declining membership.
