Acquisition Information
The majority of the pictures had been stored in the Carlson House prior to 1998. The collection of numbered and labeled pictures
and negatives that are in drawers 1 and 2 probably came from the Community Education office or Public Information Office.
According to Steve Peltz, they may have been organized by a photographer named Al Rose, although he would not have taken most
of the photographs because he did not start working for the Community Education office until 1978. Many of the miscellaneous,
unidentified pictures came from printing services and graphic arts where they were used in various college publications.
The printing services and graphic arts collections were turned over to the archives by Ron Baldwin (former head of printing
services) and Margie Moran (graphic artist).
Biography / Administrative History
The West Valley Joint Community College District was formed in January of 1963 when voters approved creation of the district
after a countywide master plan for community college education had been designed in 1962. At that time it was comprised of
the Campbell Union, Los Gatos-Saratoga high school districts and the Santa Clara Unified School District. Doors opened for
classes in fall 1964 at the Campbell campus. In early 1966, a 143-acre site in Saratoga was purchased for what would become
the permanent campus for West Valley College and the District offices. Groundbreaking for the first campus building began
in June 1967. The second campus in the College District, Mission College, began with the acquisition of 12 acres in Santa
Clara and eventually grew to be a 164-acre site. Mission College was temporarily located at Jefferson Intermediate School
from 1975 to 1979. With the completion of the first building phase in the fall of 1979, the new Mission College campus opened
its doors to students. In September 1985, the name of the District was changed from the West Valley Joint Community College
District to West Valley-Mission Community College District (WVMCCD).
Scope and Content of Collection
The first two drawers contain a collection of numbered, labeled and dated photographs and negatives that date from 1969 to
1978. These are sorted into broad divisions including, Physical Education; Business; Engineering and Technology; Humanities
and Fine Arts; Language Arts; Science and Math; Social Science; Copy Work; General; Portraits and People. These photographs
were used for publicity, college news, and college publications. Each of these divisions with numbered and labeled photographs
is followed by folders containing miscellaneous unidentified photos and negatives that fit into those divisions and most likely
represent periods covering the 1970s to the early 1990s. The third drawer contains folders with unlabeled and unidentified
photographs that have been roughly sorted into categories such as Awards; Board of Trustees; Campus Shots; Commencement; Community
Education; Events; Receptions; Staff; Students. It is believed that these photographs were taken anywhere from the mid 1970s
to the early 1990s. Nearly all of the photos are in black and white. Many of the prints are on proof sheets. The size of
the prints varies widely from thumbnail size to 8 x 10.
Arrangement
The first two drawers are organized by division: Physical Education; Business; Engineering and Technology; Humanities and
Fine Arts; Language Arts; Science and Math; Social Science; Copy Work; General; Portraits and People. Each of these divisions
with numbered and labeled photographs is followed by folders containing miscellaneous unidentified photos and negatives that
fit into those divisions organized alphabetically by subdivision. For example, miscellaneous photos from the Humanities and
Fine Arts division are subdivided by categories such as art, dance, drama, music and Physical Education is subdivided by categories
such as Adaptive P.E., Baseball, Basketball, Body Building, etc. The third drawer contains folders with unlabeled and unidentified
photographs that have been roughly sorted into categories such as Awards; Board of Trustees; Campus Shots; Commencement; Community
Education; Events; Receptions; Staff; Students.
