Scope and Content
The Story Department Records comprise materials reflecting part of the studio's process for seeking and evaluating literary
properties for potential film productions. Included are story submission cards, and script synopses and reader reports, and
reference library. NOTE: The reference library books are UNPROCESSED and unavailable for use. Inquiries regarding these
materials should be directed, in writing, to the UCLA Library Special Collections Public Service Division.
The story submission cards are essentially resume-type summaries of literary materials offered to and/or covered by RKO from
ca. 1928-1958. The file is organized alphabetically by subject index and cross referenced/indexed by story title and author
name. (The bulk of the file is composed of title and author cards). The information found on the cards may include title,
author, date received to and returned from what appears to be the story department, who submitted the work, theme, and reader.
The headings were assigned by what is believed to have been the Story Department.
The script synopses and reader reports are a mixture of synopsis-reader reports and the occasional interdepartmental communication
with comments about the works/story. Individual report files generally includes title and author of the original work, the
type of work (i.e. biographical), theme, summary, and reader name. The files within the subseries are arranged alphabetically
into a broad alphabetical filing system by title (i.e. A-Acd; Ace-Adu; Adv-Africanz).
The Reference Library comprises original literary properties including published plays, novels, and reference books collected
by what appears to the Story Department for potential studio property acquisitions. NOTE: this portion of the collection is
UNPROCESSED and unavailable for use. Inquiries regarding these materials should be directed, in writing, to the UCLA Library
Special Collections Public Service Division.
