This item was originally given to the San Francisco Maritime Museum and later accessioned into the Golden Gate National Recreation
Area museum collection. Later it was transferred to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.
Historical or Biographical Note
Biography: Captain Leighton Robinson, 1871 Oct 7-1956 Jan 19
Capt. Robinson was born in Cornwall, England in 1871. He went to sea in 1888 and settled in Sausalito, California. He was
a shantyman and was recorded with others by Sidney Robertson Cowell at Belvedere, California in 1939. The recordings are available
for download at the Library of Congress American Memory Project.
