Biographical Information:

Francis Marion Wulburn served in the Marine Corps between 1930 and 1943. During this time he was stationed in Nicaragua; the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia; an instructor at Quantico, Virginia; and at the Army's Engineer Amphibian Command at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts. He also served as Commandant of the Marine detachments aboard the Battleships of the Atlantic Fleet at the outbreak of the war, and as a staff member of the Commander of Central Pacific Operations.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence, telegraph messages, classroom materials, official publications pertaining to administrative procedures, tactics, and equipment specifications, as well as photographs and certificates of Francis Wulbern. Of particular interest are the letters of General Altamirano of the Sandinistas and of the U.S. Commander of the Northern Area in Nicaragua in 1930. Also included are telegraph messages announcing the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, the German and Italian declarations of war, and ship-to-ship communications during convoy runs to Iceland from the US during the winter of 1941/1942. There is also an extensive collection of field manuals that cover many aspects of amphibious and small unit operations.
