Biography

Edwin Coblentz Voorhies (1891-1967) began his fifty four year career with the University of California in 1913, immediately after graduation from the University's Berkeley campus. He served on the Davis campus from 1913 to 1925 in the Department of Animal Husbandry, except for a period of service in the Army during World War I. In 1925 when the Department of Agricultural Economics was organized at Berkeley, Professor Voorhies became one of its founding members. In addition to his professorial duties on the Berkeley campus, he also served the University as Dean of Students. He served at Davis as Vice-Chairman of the Statewide Department of Agricultural Economics from 1952 to 1957, when he resumed full-time professorial duties. He retired in 1958.
In 1962, Voorhies received an honorary LL.D at the 1962 Charter Day ceremonies. Voorhies Hall on the University of California, Davis campus was named in his honor in 1965.
