Abstract: The G. Edward Cassady, M.D. and Margaret Elizabeth Cassady, R.N. Lewis Carroll collection consists of photographs, correspondence,
ephemera, realia, graphic materials, games, reference works, material from stage and film adaptations, and other archival
material relating to children's literature author, mathematician, and writer Charles Dodgson (1832-1898), better known by
his pen name, Lewis Carroll. Most well known for his first children's novels,
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and
Through the Looking-Glass (1871), Carroll was a nineteenth-century British polymath with works spanning many disciplines, including but not limited
to geometry, early photography, politics, logic, and puzzles. Dr. George Cassady and Linda Cassady assembled, categorized,
and donated the collection in multiple installments beginning in 2000. The collection is named for George Cassady's parents,
G. Edward and Margaret Elizabeth Cassady.

Arrangement
The arrangement of the series and description in the Cassady Lewis Carroll finding aid is based on the Cassady Lewis Carroll
Bibliography, created and maintained by George Cassady.
The USC Libraries included all of the bibliography's sets in the list below, but some of the sets will not appear elsewhere
in the finding aid if they have not been used to group archival material. Material that the bibliography groups under "Set
23: USC Wonderland Award" is described in a separate finding aid titled "Wonderland Award Submissions collection" -- Collection
no. 0293.
Following is an excerpt from the introduction to the Cassady Lewis Carroll Bibliography by George Cassady, which describes
the scope and evolution of this collection's arrangement.
There are many arbitrary decisions in this listing -- some were conscious decisions, others were adopted from earlier bibliographies.
Items are grouped in 23 Sets. While this may seem a simple and obvious action, it continues to be strangely difficult. For
example, should an abridged comic book version of 'Wonderland' in Spanish be considered a 'Foreign Translation' or an 'Alternative
Publishing'? Is a book composed entirely of photographs to be placed in 'Art' or 'Reference Works'? Should magazine & newspaper
articles containing crucial descriptive bibliographic & historical information be considered 'Reference Works' or should they
be listed among 'Ephemera' as standard cataloging generally requires? And speaking of 'Ephemera', is my inclusion of such
diverse items as puppets, postcards, postage stamps, and puzzles in that category simply because they all begin with a 'P'
-- "Why not", the March Hare would say -- or simply stupid on my part? In the end, my subjective decisions are arbitrary and
arguable. While they generally follow the patterns of earlier bibliographies, there are many differences. A brief overview,
with details of the sequence of entries follows:
- Set 1: Reference Works, Criticism, Annotations, Biography, Bibliography and Related Works
- Ordered by date with several exceptions. Grouping by illustrator or publisher often interrupts the chronologic sequence. Also
of note is my decision to include in this set books and writings contemporaneous with Dodgson which may have influenced his
work. Works pertaining to his interests and acquaintances, as well as several books from his personal library are also included.
- Set 2: Alice's Adventures Underground
- Primary sort is by date.
- Set 3: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
- Ordered first by publishing date, then with publishers' editions remaining together in chronologic sequence.
- Set 4: The Nursery Alice
- Entered in the same sequence as in Set 3.
- Set 5: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland AND Through the Looking-Glass
- Entered in the same sequence as Set 3, I have included editions in which 'Wonderland' & 'Looking-Glass' are published in a
single binding, or those in separate bindings but housed together in a single slipcase or box. It is important to note I have
NOT included here many editions apparently published as 'sets' but bound separately or each in their own slipcase.
- Set 6: Through the Looking-Glass
- Entered in the same sequence as Sets 3, 4, and 5.
- Set 7: Carroll Works on Mathematics, Logic, Puzzles and Games
- Primary sort is by date.
- Set 8: Carroll Pamphlets, Diaries and Letters
- Primary sort is by date.
- Set 9: The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in Eight Fits
- Primary sort is by date. Difficult decisions here for editions in an 'Alice' work includes 'Snark'. When this happens – or
when 'Snark' is published with 'Sylvie & Bruno' - what's a bibliographer to do?
- Set 10: Sylvie and Bruno
- Primary sort is by date.
- Set 11: Other Carroll Works, Including Poetry, Excerpts, Collections & Pieces in Anthologies
- Primary sort is by date.
- Set 12: Renderings in Other Languages
- Translations are recorded in alphabetic order by language, each subset in chronologic order. Included here are critical reference
works on translation written in English, and excluded are East Asian translations.
- Set 13: East Asian Works
- Group as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean translations each subset generally in chronologic order. Includes 'back translations'
of works originally in an Asian language. There is considerable overlap between this and other sets, as Comics, Multimedia,
Ephemera, Art in an Asian language are included here.
- Set 14: Parodies and Derivatives
- Ordered by date. This set has true parodies of the 'Alice' books, as well as many with only the title or a few phrases related
to Carroll's works.
- Set 15: Alternative Formats
- Entered by item type, then each subset by date.
- Set 16: Art
- Entered by item type, then each subset by date.
- Set 17: Sound Recordings
- Entered by item type, each subset by date.
- Set 18: Movies and Multimedia
- Entered by item type, then each subset by date.
- Set 19: Performing Arts: Musical Scores, Theatrical Plays, Screenplays, Playbills and Theatrical Ephemera
- Entered by item type, then each subset by date.
- Set 20: Ephemera and Realia
- Listed by item type, then each subset by date.
- Set 21: Carroll Societies Publications
- Primary sort is by date.
- Set 22: Catalogs
- Listed alphabetically by auction house or bookseller, then by date.
- Set 23: USC Wonderland Award
- Includes student entries for the annual University of Southern California Wonderland Award. Mostly from USC students, they
are listed by item type, then by date.

Related Materials
Published monographs, serial publications, and other Cassady Lewis Carroll items that the USC Libraries cataloged separately
can be found via the USC Libraries' main catalog search.
Parts of the Cassady Lewis Carroll collection are described in two other finding aids:
- Collection no. 0293: Wonderland Award Submissions collection, which consists of projects submitted for the annual Wonderland Awards sponsored by Linda Cassady.
- Collection no. 6106: Vivian Tobin papers, which consist of photographs, correspondence, and ephemera related to Vivian Tobin's performance as Alice in the first American
theatrical production of "Alice in Wonderland" in 1915.
Processing Information
Prior to 2021, this finding aid only described ephemera (articles, event programs, bookmarks, etc.) and realia donated by
the Cassadys. Beginning in 2021, the USC Libraries broadened the scope of the finding aid to include all material donated
by the Cassadys that the Libraries classified as archival.

Autographed letter signed from Charles L. Dodgson to Henry Frederick Rivers /repositories/3/archival_objects/669968
1874-04-25
Biographical / Historical
A little-known fact about Carroll was that he was a stutterer. In 1859, Carroll undertook speech therapy lessons from James
Hunt, who was considered the foremost speech correctionist in Great Britain at the time; he was estimated to have treated
1,700 people who stutter.
"Henry Frederick Rivers (1830-1911), Curate succesively of St. Paul's and St. Mary's, Chatham, and of Offham, Kent, married
(1863) Elizabeth Hunt, sister of the speech therapist James Hunt, and when Hunt died in 1870 took over his speech therapy
practice ... Dodgson, having lost in Hunt's death his own speech therapist, turned to a fellow-stammerer for advice" (Cohen,
p. 191). After writing back and forth, he spent four days (August 1 to 5) at Rivers' home near Tonbridge.
The article "The curious life of Lewis Carroll" in the journal of The Stuttering Foundation (https://www.stutteringhelp.org/
content/curious-life-lewis-carroll) gives a number of examples in his books of advice to children who stutter.
From Alice in Wonderland: In chapter two, the Red Queen suggests that Alice should open her mouth "a little wider" when she
speaks; later in chapter four, Alice describes "a rather awkward pause as she struggles to begin conversation. These are just
a few of many excerpts that may have described the agonizing moments Carroll felt as he wrestled his own stuttering blocks.

My dear Rivers,
The matter I spoke to you about (the undergraduate here who is a bad stammerer, & whose father is too poor to pay you the
full fee) has now taken a practical shape. The father is willing to make the effort to pay 10 guineas (according to your kind
offer), & 3 guineas a week board, & I am requested to ask you whether you could receive him for a fortnight beginning from
Friday the 12th of June (he is obliged to reside here till near that date.)
The clergyman of the parish where the father lives wrote us a certificate of his poverty when he applied for one of our "Exhibitions"
(which are intended to assist poor students), & he offers to send you a similar one but perhaps you will not require this
when you have read his letter, which I enclose. Please return it to me; & would you also write me a note (which I can forward
to Mr. Rees, the father) stating that you are willing to take the youth on the abovementioned terms.
Would you also tell me, for my information, what are the regular dates of the beginnings & endings of your vacations. It is
at once a pleasure & a great benefit to me to come down to you for a day or two at a time, and always seems to give me a fresh
start towards the goal of a real cure.
Sincerely yours,
C.L. Dodgson

Autographed Letter Signed. Nov. 29, 1882. 1 page, on a note card with Rev. C.L. Dodgson, Christ Church, Oxford stamped in
purple on the top. To Evey.
My dear Evey,
I find Miss Leith's Birthday-Book contained only one versefrom "Alice"! So it will not inteifere with your friends' publication.
I hope the enclosed will improve your mind.
Yours affectionately,
C.L. Dodgson
B & L Rootenberg was unable to find a reference to Evey (likely a nickname for Evelyn). Miss Leith could possibly be a reference
to the half-sister of George MacDonald, Louisa (b. 1843), later Mrs. David Leith.

Physical Description: Written in black ink across a single folded sheet, both sides, measuring 11.0 x 17.9 cm. "Ch. Oxford, May 26, 1896. Dear Miss
Hope, Beatrice Hatch tells me that you are a resident in Oxford, & that you would like to pay another visit to my rooms. This
would be a pleasure to me also, specially as I understand from her that you have been an invalid & have only lately been able
to get about. But she was not able to tell me whether you were one who (like her, & like many other ladies of my acquaintance)
would regard me as a sufficient chaperon for such a visit. I am a great believer in parties of the unconventional number of
two: & Beatrice has been, on many occasions, my only guest. If such a project does not alarm you, I shall be very glad to
call & arrange to fetch you down, some afternoon for tea: & you can tell me how much walking you are able to do, & whether
we could manage it by using the tram-car for going & returning. Believe me very truly yours, C. L. Dodgson."

Oxford, England; Handwritten original holograph by Charles L. Dodgson.
Scope and Contents
Original holograph, handwritten in ink & pencil on recto only, of lesson for teaching logic, conceived in diagram format.
Single leaf, measures 29.8 x 22.0 cm. - has been folded twice to place in envelope, dated '5/3/94' by Dodgson in upper right
corner. Dodgson has handwritten the title, date, and drawn the diagram; a penciled explication in another hand, presumably
the same hand which also filled in parts of Dodgson's ink diagram in pencil, most likely by a student. Provenance: Blackwell,
prominent Oxford bookseller, with their protective printed envelope. Handwriting in ink on envelope, in unknown hand, says
"Dodgson (C. L.) A binary problem Let 'Universe" be "Books' in his holograph. 5/3/94." Blackwell attended the dispersal auction
sale of Dodgson's library and effects in 1898, and it is probable that this manuscript was acquired by them at this time.
Later - the Justin Schiller Childrens' Book Collection. [Notes: Diary entry by Dodgson on 05-Mar-1894: "Gave two Lectures
in Logic, one at the High School, to the girls, at 2: the other to Miss Soulsby and four mistresses as well as Edith Lucy
and Miss Scott, at 8 p.m." This sheet was likely used as a visual aid by Dodgson with penciled annotations by one of the students.
Dodgson here was explaining in a simple way the logic terms of "mutually exclusive" and "exhaustive," as well as their converses.
He used a visual example of books on shelves to get his points across. In this context it is about whether books overlap on
the shelves numbered 1 to 10. Books A and D overlap on shelf 3, therefore A and D are not mutually exclusive. A, B, and C
cover all the shelves numbered 1 to 10, and are therefore exhaustive. The term "Universe" in this lesson means every known
book that exists. The additional pencil notes on the lower portion of this sheet were apparently to help explain the logic
diagram used in Dodgson's book "The Game of Logic". Not previously recorded in any bibliography; to my knowledge, this is
'one of a kind']

The Harleian Miscellany, Volume IX, pages 400-403. The article of interest is titled, "A New Looking-Glass for the Kingdom; Wherein those that admire
the late Governments, may have a true prospect of Liberty and Slavery, and take their choice." Originally from a half-sheet,
Folio, printed at London, for J. C., near Fleet-Bridge, 1690. Of interest to the student of English history (or perhaps, to
all of us burdened with taxes and political dissention!), the phrase of particular Carrollian interest is " . . to shew, as
in a mirror, the predigious sums it cost the kingdom . . ". [Notes: The 1st edition of
The Harleian Miscellany was published in 12 volumes between 1744-1746. The chapbooks were selected & edited by William Oldys and the preface written
by Dr. Ben Johnson. In this 1808-1811 reprint, the original articles were chronologically arranged by John Malham]

produce illustrations for several childrens' books. Later in that period, his work most often depicted battle scenes for graphic
novels. "He dropped out in 1966 . . and refused all offers of work . . ". However, the auction gallery dates this work as
1970 and indicates it was for an unfinished project to illustrate Lewis Carroll's "Alice".

Biographical / Historical
Besides his better-known works involving Alice, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), better known as Lewis Carroll, who took
up photography in 1856, was one of the most accomplished Victorian amateur photographers. He is most famous for his portraits
of girls; a portrait of a boy is quite rare on the market.
Brook (1869-1940) was the younger brother of Alexandra (Xie) Kitchin, who posed for a number of portraits by Carroll from
the time she was about four until she turned sixteen. Both were the children of Rev. George William Kitchin (1827-1912), who
was Dodgson's colleague at Christ Church, Oxford, and later became Dean of Winchester and Dean of Durham, and his wife, Alice
Maud Taylor, second daughter of Bridges Taylor, the British consul in Denmark at the time. Her godmother was Alexandra of
Denmark, then Princess of Wales, who had been a childhood friend of her mother. In addition to Brook and Xie, the family had
three other children, George Herbert, Hugh Bridges, and Dorothy Maud Mary. All were featured in Dodgson's photographs.

Authors, musical composers, and other contributors: Lewis Carroll; W. W. Young; W. W. Young (Director), Viola Savoy (Alice),
Harry Marks (Dodo), Herbert Rice (White Rabbit), Louis Merkle (Dormouse), William Tilden (Mad Hatter). Bryn Mawr, PA; Bryn
Mawr College.
Scope and Contents
Playbill for a benefit performance for the Bryn Mawr Endowment. Date unknown but this 52 minute 6-reel silent film was released
19-Jan-1915 and an Eskay Harris Feature Film Company ad dated 01-Apr-1916 indicated their promotion of a " . . $25,000, 6-reel
film . . " for performances at educational institutions. The program contains 1 color & 3 sepia-toned images from the film
as well as a photograph of the Bryn Mawr campus. Included are 2 brief commentaries, one (anonymous) concerning the Bryn Mawr
endowment, the other - "How Alice Got Into The Wonderland of Movies" by W. W. Young, screenwriter & director of the film.
The program is on cream coated paper, 2 sheets, folded & stapled (thus 4 leaves, 8 unnumbered pages), each page measuring
27.7 x 19.8 cm. [Notes: This performance likely took place in 1915 as a later "re-release" version contained only 5-reels
(IMDB). Viola Savoy ("Alice") was 14-15 years old at the time she made the movie and had been acting since infancy with over
100 stage appearances. This was her 1st motion picture performance; she made one later the same year, after which she never
appeared on film or stage again. Curiously, the screenwriter & director, W. W. Young, had never directed a film before or
after this one.]

Aldous Huxley Letter to Anita Loos: Script for Disney

1945
Physical Description: Autograph letter signed (ALS).
Scope and Contents
Single leaf, measures 27.8 x 21.5 cm., typewritten both sides, with handwritten corrections and signature. Letter from Aldous
Huxley, 145 1/2 South Doheny, LA 36 CA, to 'Dearest Anita' (Loos), dated 13-Oct-1945. The letter primarily concerns Huxley's
ideas concerning his work on
Brave New World. The penultimate paragraph changes the topic and says, "..Meanwhile, as Donald Hyde has probably told you, I am about to
sign up with Disney for the script of an Alice in Wonderland, which is to be a cartoon version of Tenniel's drawings and Carroll's
story, embedded in a flesh-and-blood episode of the life of the Rev. Charles Dodgson. I think something rather nice might
be made out of this - the unutterably odd, repressed and ridiculous Oxford lecturer on logic and mathematics, seeking refuge
in the company of little girls and in his own phantasy. There is plenty of comic material in Dodgson's life, and I think it
will be legitimate to invent some such absurd climax as a visit of Queen Victoria to Oxford and her insistence on having the
author of Alice presented to her, in preference to all the big wigs - the scene dissolving, in Carroll's fancy, to the end
of Alice: 'They're nothing but a pack of cards' - and the Queen and her retinue become ridiculous cartoon figures and are
scattered to the four winds."

"This refreshingly different word game is based on a notation in Lewis Carroll's diaries. Martin Gardner, author of
The Annotated Alice, has defined suitable rules. Move letters like chess queens to form words and score points. There's no capturing, and you
can't sabotage your opponent's scoring row, though you can try to blockade the opponent's moves. The charming 22" red game
cloth is printed in white to look like Alice's picnic tablecloth, with a decorative border and even a magic mushroom. Washable.
A total of 110 letter tiles serve for this and several other games on the same board, plus solitaires. Enduringly entertaining
for 1, 2 or more players, ages 8 to adult."
"The large red bandanna is screen-printed with a checkerboard and fanciful border, even some magical mushrooms for Alice.
There are 55 handmade letter tiles in each player's color. Players use eight randomly drawn letters for each round of the
game, though not all letters have to become part of the scoring word. Any unneeded letters are handy to use as blocking pieces."
Game is combination of Scrabble & Chess, devised by Martin Gardner. Housed in dark brown simulatioed leather paper-covered
cardboard box which measures 21.4 x 21.4 x 2.9 cm. and contains instruction booklet, 2 bags of playing pieces, & cloth playing
board. No missing pieces - never been played. Also includes printout of online description, https://www.celebrationofmind.
