Scope and Contents
This series documents the administration and management of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society from its inception through
2015. Subseries within this series are specific to management, finances, legal matters, correspondence, ephemera, and publicity.
Subseries 1.1. Management
ca. 1968-2015
Scope and Contents
This subseries includes records related to STJS's board of directors and committees, elections, planning, marketing, staffing,
and policies and procedures. Board of directors' material includes meeting minutes and agenda, correspondence, surveys, monthly
reports, and lists and photographs of board members. STJS had a number of committees that oversaw various aspects of its operations,
including fundraising, finance, marketing, elections, musicians, education and scholarship programs, events, and bylaws and
policies. Committee records typically include meeting minutes and correspondence. Committees with the most material include
the Music Committee and Guest Artist Committee, both of which selected and coordinated with musicians to play at STJS monthly
meetings and events; the Governance Committee, which dictated STJS's policies and bylaws; and the Education Committee, which
oversaw Trad Jazz Camp and other educational programs. This subseries also includes iterations of STJS's logo, membership
lists, material related to STJS's publication "And All That Jazz," photographs, and song lists. There are a small number of
records related to specific people, including complaints made against Roger Krum while he was STJS president; papers collected
or created by Buddy Trumbo; a scrapbook created by Hal Needham; and drafts of Mike Foley's "And All That Jazz" columns. This

Scope and Contents
This subseries contains the newsletters of the New Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society (the original name of STJS) from 1968
to 1970, and a complete run of STJS's monthly newspaper, "And All That Jazz," from 1970 to 2011, missing only June 1974. There
are also four issues from 2012: December 2011/January 2012, February, March, and May. Many copies are autographed by musicians.
A 1992 STJS publication called "Jazz Notes" is also included. "And All That Jazz" chronicled the society's activities and
its monthly meeting performances and other events, and included listings of upcoming jazz concerts and interviews with musicians.

Scope and Contents
This subseries contains newsletters and newspapers published by jazz clubs and jazz bands, and periodicals about jazz, from
throughout the United States. There are particularly large runs of newsletters from the New Orleans Jazz Club of Northern
California from 1972 to 1998, and the Sacramento New Orleans Hot Jazz Society from 1972 to 1980. Other larger collections
of newsletters include "The Second Line" from the New Orleans Jazz Club from 1950 to 1976; the Madison Jazz Society's newsletter
from 1986 to 1995; "Jazzomania" from 1977 to 1997; and "The American Rag / West Coast Rag" from 1988 to 2000. This subseries
is arranged alphabetically by publication name. The name of the publishing jazz club or band follows each publication's name
when necessary.

This series documents STJS's largest event, the Sacramento Jubilee, which was held every Memorial Day Weekend from 1973 to
2017. The subseries that make up this series show how Jubilee was planned, operated, and publicized from its inception until
2014, and shows how STJS staff sought to make changes to the festival to increase attendance. Material is related to Jubilee's
management, finances, operations, attendance, staff and volunteers, concessions, performers, and sites. Also included are
annual demographics reports, photographs, programs, posters, brochures, fliers, and scrapbooks. See Series 6 for audio recordings

Scope and Contents
This subseries focuses on the planning and management of Jubilee, with records from the committees that planned all aspects
of the festivals, including selecting musical acts, planning the opening ceremony and parade, hiring vendors, coordinating

This subseries is made up of Jubilee programs, programs for specific Jubilee concerts and venues, and preview and recap publications.
There is a full run of Jubilee programs from 1974 to 2013. Specific concert and venue programs include Pianorama, Jazz Mass,
and the Enterprise Hotel. There are a few special programs, including a 1983 souvenir Jubilee program and an "Alternative
Jubilee" program from 2007 that highlighted non-traditional jazz bands as a way to promote the festival to people not interested
in trad jazz. Also included are a children's Jubilee activity book and a few program proofs with edits. Jubilee programs are

Scope and Contents
This subseries includes prints, slides, negatives, proof sheets, digital photos, and a photo album that document Jubilee,
including events and performances, sites, performers, Hall of Fame ceremonies and recipients, emperors and empresses, parades,
staff and volunteers, and audiences and crowds. The majority of photographs were grouped by year and those have been kept
in chronological order. A smaller number of images were organized by subject, and that arrangement has been kept for those
photos. Images that could not be identified by exact year are filed by decade ranges based on other identifying factors in
the photographs, like hair and clothing styles, cars, performers, and partial dates.

Scope and Contents
This subseries consists primarily of programs, fliers, and brochures, for trad jazz events not put on by STJS. They include
national and international festivals; fliers for trad jazz concerts in and around Sacramento, including at Capone's, the Woodlake
Inn, and the Saddle Rack; and fliers for trad jazz concerts in other parts of the state and throughout the country. There
are a small number of photographs and posters, as well. This subseries is arranged alphabetically.

Scope and Contents
This series consists of material related to musicians who played (or sought to play) at STJS events, general information on
jazz musicians, and performances. There are a small number of files on early jazz musicians, as well. It is broken up into
four subseries. The first three consist of files kept by STJS on specific musicians. The last subseries contains musician
lists, set lists, sign-up sheets, and other information about specific musicians.
Subseries 5.1. Musician files
1936-2009 (bulk 1965-2009)
Scope and Contents
This subseries is made up of files kept by STJS on different musicians and bands, the majority of whom played (or sought to
play) at STJS events, including Jubilee and monthly meetings (Jazz Sundays). Files are arranged alphabetically by band name
or musician's last name. Some musicians can be found in multiple files, under their name and under bands they've played with.
In some cases, a musician's band name is in parentheses after their name if that band is a main focus of the file folder.
Many of the musicians here also have files in Subseries 5.3. Files include a variety of material, including photographs, contracts,
biographies, member lists, promo packets, recordings, Jubilee band evaluations, correspondence, musician pitches to play at
Jubilee, and descriptions used in programs. Musical recordings on CD have been kept in these folders; recordings on cassette
have been moved and housed with other cassettes in Series 6.
Conditions Governing Access
Some paperwork in these files have musicians' social security numbers. Archivists will check each file upon access request
and make redactions.
