Biography

Charles F. Muller was born on January 11, 1844. At the age of 17, he left his home in Philadelphia to join the Union Army to fight in the Civil War. He enlisted in Company B of the 29th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers as a private, being mustered into service on July 5, 1861. After several months of training, his regiment began to see some fighting in late February of 1862. In December of 1863, his regiment became the first in the country to become a veteran organization, as Muller joined his fellow soldiers in re-enlisting at the end of their initial term of service. Several weeks later, Muller was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. In April of 1864, Muller's regiment joined "Sherman's Army," led by General William Tecumseh Sherman, for the famous "March to the Sea" through Georgia. Muller was wounded at Pine Knob, Georgia on June 15, 1864. He recovered, however, and was mustered out with his company in July of 1865.
After the war, Charles Muller traveled throughout the South trying to make a living in agricultural sales. He had a difficult time of it, and by 1869 he decided to return to Philadelphia and make a fresh start. He eventually married and had children, and by 1891 was living in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was here that he began to write his memoirs.
