The M.S. Gripsholm was a Swedish liner used to exchange civilians and Prisoners of War between Japan, Germany, and Italy during World War II. The cruise liner participated in two exchanges between Japan and the United States in June 1942 and September 1943. The author, Atushi Archi Miyamoto, was a child aboard the Gripsholm during the second exchange. Miyamoto later returned to the United States as a teenager in 1948 and served as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army until his retirement.
