Processing Note

The photographs in this collection were separated from the Ron Cleveland papers (HDC 1061, SAFR 12782). There are dummy folders in the manuscript collection and manuscript finding aid for some of these photographs. The references are not specific enough to point to a particular image but they do indicate the subject matter of the photographs that were removed.
Photographs were arranged into File Units within each Series based on Cleveland's original groupings. Some of the original enclosures had notes regarding subject and date written on them. When there were no notes on the original enclosure, archives staff named the File Unit based on the subject of the photographs and placed them in chronological order among the other File Units. Many of the original enclosures were undated, and for Series 1-3, dates were assigned based on the known completion date of the model. Most slides were printed with the date they were processed and these were used to date the photos, with the caveat that the actual photographs may have been taken earlier than the year they were processed.
It should be noted that not all negatives have associated prints, and some prints do not have associated negatives; therefore, both the prints and the negatives may need to be consulted to view all of the images.
The oral histories and films in Series 5 have been described as best as possible, using the information written on the original boxes and cassettes/reels. Once these recordings and films are digitized, we will be able to listen to (and/or watch) the materials and we will be able to update and enhance these descriptions.
The collection was processed by Amy Croft and M. Crawford, 2011. A second set of material from accession SAFR-00230 was found after the finding aid was created in 2011; this second set of material was integrated into the finding aid in December 2012.
The descriptions in this collection guide were compiled using the best available sources of information. Such sources include the creator's annotations or descriptions, collection accession files, primary and secondary source material and subject matter experts. While every effort was made to provide accurate information, in the event that you find any errors in this guide please contact the reference staff in order for us to evaulate and make corrections to this guide.

Historical or Biographical Note

Ron Cleveland (1912-1987) was a California architect who had a strong interest in maritime history and the construction and practices of 19th century sailing vessels, particularly the structure and rigging of West Coast barkentines.
Ronald Millard Cleveland was born in McClellan, Washington, on June 28, 1912. He was a Fine Arts graduate of the University of Washington and a graduate designer of the Art Center School of Los Angeles. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects. Cleveland worked as a sketch artist in the movie industry eventually becoming the West Coast Regional Director of Raymond Loewy Associates, a firm of industrial designers in Los Angeles where he worked for four years.
In 1947, Ron formed his own firm with his partner Sterling Leach. He worked as a principle architect at Leach, Cleveland and Associates for 36 years, specializing in the design of over 100 Southern California supermarkets. The firm designed some permanent exhibits at the Los Angeles Museum of Science and Industry and was retained in 1968 by the California Museum Foundation as consultants for, and designers of the exhibit "The Queen Mary Story," as part of Jacques Cousteau's Museum of the Sea, on board QUEEN MARY while she was a museum ship in Long Beach.
Ron's interest in maritime history started because his grandfather worked on spritsail barges on the Thames River in England in the late 19th century. From 1965-1969, Cleveland built his first ship model, the English spritsail barge KATHLEEN, and donated it to England's National Maritime Museum in May 1973. From around 1966-1970, Ron also completed a model of the Norwegian brigantine LEON. He chose to build this model because there was a lot of extant documentation about its construction and it was a relatively straightforward model to build.
In 1969, Ron began construction of a model of the barkentine KOHALA, which took him nearly 15 years to complete. During this time he wrote a manuscript titled "Rigging of West Coast Barkentines and Schooners" which has details about the construction of his model of the KOHALA. According to Ron, Karl Kortum told him that to his knowledge, no one had pursued the study of structure and rigging of West Coast barkentines to the extent that Cleveland had over this 15 year period.
Cleveland did extensive research using archival and library resources to ascertain the specifications of the vessels that he created, in order to build them to scale as accurately as possible. Ron also consulted with other maritime historians and people who had worked or sailed on similar vessels in the past, particularly to ensure that he built the structure and rigging correctly. For example, he interviewed Harlan Gow, who worked as a shipwright in the Bendixsen shipyard from 1898-1908, about how they had built the West Coast vessels. Cleveland also interviewed Lester Stone, whose grandfather built one of the first shipyards in California in 1853; Lester started running the family business in 1923. Cleveland also relied on the assistance and knowledge of Robert "Bob" Weinstein, Captain Fred Klebingat, and San Francisco Maritime Museum Founder and Chief Curator Karl Kortum. Ron joined the Nautical Research Guild in 1964 and later began a Southern California Chapter with the assistance of Robert Weinstein. The Guild is devoted to maritime history, particularly ship model building.
In 1985, Mr. Cleveland donated the KOHALA model to the National Maritime Museum in San Francisco, now known as the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park. The model of the KOHALA is on permanent display in the San Francisco Maritime Museum at 900 Beach Street. In addition to this model of a vessel that played a role in 20th century maritime history and commerce, Ron's extensive research and notes are a valuable resource about how KOHALA was constructed and can be found in his manuscript collection, also held at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. Although the age of sail has past, Ron's model of KOHALA literally and figuratively preserves a small piece of that history with remarkable accuracy.
Ron Cleveland was married to Jo Dee and they had three children: Stacey, Eric, and Gregory. Ron Cleveland died in Costa Mesa, California on May 23, 1987.

Series 1.  Kohala (built 1901; barkentine, 4m), circa 1960-1984

Extent: 2366 photographs (2829 physical forms: prints, negatives, slides, contact sheets)

Scope and Content Note

Items 0001-2454. This Series contains slides, photographic prints and negatives of the model of KOHALA that Ron Cleveland built. It also includes research photographs of another KOHALA model and images of the original vessel. The model that Ron built is a product not only of his interest in maritime history but also the result of in-depth archival research.

Biography/Organization History

KOHALA was a four-masted barkentine that was built at Fairhaven, California in 1901 by the Bendixsen Shipbuilding Co. for the management of Hind, Rolph & Co., San Francisco. She weighed 891 tons and had a one million foot lumber capacity. KOHALA was first primarily used in the West Coast lumber trade. Later she established herself in the sugar trade on a cargo route to Hawaii from San Francisco, and is named after the North Shore and volcano of the Big Island itself. She also hauled coal. Her last sail passage was from Callao to San Francisco in ballast in the summer of 1921, after which she was laid up. On June 29, 1927, KOHALA was sold to Robert D. Blackman of the Hermosa Amusement Corp. in Hermosa Beach, California. She was then then turned into a fishing barge in the waters near her home port, San Diego, Santa Monica and the Hawaiian Islands. On December 25, 1941, KOHALA was mistaken for a possible Japanese submarine and accidentally sunk by American bombers near Redondo Beach, California.

Subseries 1.1.  Kohala model photographs, 1969-1984 , 1969-1984

Extent: 2329 photographs (2779 physical forms: black-and-white and color slides, photographic prints, contact sheets and negatives)

Scope and Content Note

Items 0001-2417. Photographs of the KOHALA model built by Ron Cleveland, in various stages of construction. While the photographs are primarily of the model, there are several of Ron with the model, Captain Fred Klebingat and his wife Irene, Bob Weinstein, and Jo Dee Cleveland.

Biography/Organization History

Ron Cleveland built the model of KOHALA over a 15 year period from 1969-1984. The model was built to a scale of 3/16 inch equaling one foot. During this time he travelled the world doing research and corresponded with Captain Fred Klebingat to ascertain details about how the model should be built, in order to be as authentic to the original vessel as possible. Klebingat was a knowledgeable and important figure in maritime history and had also once commanded a sister ship of KOHALA. Robert Weinstein (Bob Weinstein) was also an important consultant on the project. Ron conducted tape recorded interviews with people who had worked or sailed on similar vessels in the past, including: Harlan Gow, who worked as a shipwright in the Bendixsen shipyard from 1898-1908, about how they had built the West Coast vessels; and Lester Stone, whose grandfather built one of the first shipyards in California in 1853 and who later ran the shipyard. These interviews can be found in Series 5.

Arrangement

The photographs have been left in Ron Cleveland's original groupings but the groupings have been arranged in chronological order. Each File Unit represents one of Ron's groupings. It appears that Cleveland created groups of photographs to illustrate certain elements of his work such as creating the metal pieces for the masts and rigging. Consequently in some cases, images and subject matter from one roll of film can be found in multiple groupings. Other times, File Units contain an entire roll of film. Some File Units contain copy negatives, which likely duplicate other photographic images in this collection; however rather than trying to ascertain which images correspond to the copy negatives, each of these copy images has been assigned its own Item number.

Biography/Organization History

The spritsail barge KATHLEEN was a flat-bottomed sailing ship which traded on the Thames and Medway and along the South and East Coasts of England. She was launched in 1901 from Lewis Glover's yard at Gravesend and registered 59 tons. The barge was originally owned by Lewis Glover and William Henry Duttson but in 1909 she was sold to the Whitstable Shipping Company. On March 6, 1923, KATHLEEN was hit and sunk by the Cunard Line vessel VIRGILIA, which was being towed by the river tugs SUN VII and SUN IX. She was repaired and ready to resume work again by November 1923. In 1945, KATHLEEN was converted to auxiliary power. In 1965, the barge was purchased by Richard Walsh and re-rigged as a sailing barge from 1965-1966. She was sold again in 1979 and was converted to a houseboat in Holland in the 1980s.

Series 5.  Oral Histories and Films, 1966-1984

Extent: 25 EA (23 sound recordings and 2 films)

Scope and Content Note

Items 3661-3685. Contains interviews of Charles Bywater, Harlan Gow, Captain Fred Klebingat and Lester Stone discussing West Coast shipbuilding; the interviews were recorded from 1966-1984. Interviewers include Ron Cleveland, Karl Kortum, and Bob Weinstein. Also contains two films taken in 1979 featuring: Thames barges, CHRISTIAN RADICH (built 1937; full rigged ship) and STAR OF INDIA (built 1863; bark, 3m).
The sound recordings are significant because the people that were interviewed were influential in the history of the Pacific Coast lumber trade and shipbuilding in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The interviews document elements of this history that might otherwise be lost. The recordings are historically significant not only because of their documentary nature, but also because of the connection to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park and the historic vessels in its care. For example, interviewee Harlan Gow worked at the Bendixsen shipyard, which is where C.A. THAYER was built, and some of the details about ship building are likely relevant to C.A. THAYER as well.

Biography/Organization History

Biographies of interviewees: Charles Bywater (1892-) Charles Bywater was born in Seattle in 1892 and raised in Port Hadlock. He longshored at Mulkilteo, Port Angeles, and other Puget Sound ports. He was married in 1921 or 1922.
Harlan Gow (1881-1977) Harlan Dempster Gow was born in Eureka, California on October 27, 1881. His parents were both born in Canada. He worked as a shipwright in the Bendixsen shipyard from 1898-1908. According to the 1910 U.S. Federal Census, Harlan was married to Nellie Gow (whose parents were born in Canada; this is likely Ellen G. Gow)). On the 1920 U.S. Federal Census, he was married to Ellen G. Gow (Ellen Grace Dobbin Gow, born March 30, 1886, died March 28, 1954) and they had two daughters: Lois J. Gow (later Lois. J. Dixon) (February 19, 1912-May 1995) and Rhoda M. Gow. (born around March 1917). In 1942, Harlan Gow was self-employed at a dairy in Fortuna, California in Humboldt County. Gow died in October 1977.
Lester Stone (1892-1975) Lester F. Stone was the owner of the Stone Boat Yard from 1923-1970, although he worked there with his father Frank starting in 1912. The Stone Boat Yard was a San Francisco Bay Area boat building company that was located in Alameda, California, from 1971-2004. The business had three previous names, and has been in four other locations in the San Francisco Bay Area since its establishment in San Francisco by W.I. Stone in 1853. It was run by three generations of Stones from 1853 until 1970 (W.I. Stone, W.F. Stone, and Lester Stone). It was one of the oldest and longest running businesses on the Pacific Coast and its boats and designs were very influential in Pacific Coast maritime history. Each of these boat yards was often referred to as "the Stone Boat Yard," "Stone Yard," or "Stone's Yard," (shortening their official name) even though only the last iteration of the business (from 1971-2004) was officially called the Stone Boat Yard.
Captain Fred K. Klebingat (1889-1985) Captain Fred K. Klebingat was a sailor throughout his life, a key figure in the drive to establish FALLS OF CLYDE (built 1878; bark, 4m) as a museum ship in Hawaii in the 1960s, the author of many letters and essays about his seafaring life (including the series "Christmas at Sea") and a historian of the age of sail.
Friedrich Karl Klebingat was born near Kiel, Germany, on October 7, 1889. He started his seafaring career in 1905, working as a deck hand on the full rigged German ship D.H. WATJEN (built 1892; ship, 3m) upon which he rounded Cape Horn to Chile. Over the years he worked on the following vessels (the following list is in chronological order): ANNA (built 1893; bark, 4m); CHANSLOR; WILLIAM F. HERRIN; CITY OF TOPEKA (built 1884; merchant vessel); FALLS OF CLYDE (built 1878; bark, 4m); STAR OF POLAND (built 1901; bark, 4m); CHIN PU; MELROSE (built 1902; schooner, 4m); FISHERMAN (built 1919; schooner, 3m: yacht) (ex MARSHAL FOCH); NAVIGATOR (schooner, 2m: yacht); BALI (yacht); Liberty ships (OLIVER EVANS, WM. MULHOLLAND) and tankers (APACHE CANYON, HARPERS FERRY); and COOS BAY (motorship).
Fred married Phyllis Cramond Reid (November 26, 1905-June 5, 1980) in New Zealand on board FISHERMAN on April 1, 1927. Four years later, Fred and Phyllis had a son named Frederick John Klebingat (December 2, 1931-August 17, 1970). Klebingat was friends with other maritime historians such as Harold Huycke and Karl Kortum, with whom he corresponded extensively. Captain Klebingat died on March 31, 1985, at the age of 95, in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Robert A. Weinstein (Bob Weinstein) (1914-1995) Robert A. Weinstein was a maritime historian, authority on the photographic history of the American West and the city of Los Angeles, author, art director and illustrator of fine books and magazines. He often went by the name Bob Weinstein, but he was born Albert Louis Weinstein in Philadelphia on October 9, 1914. He renamed himself Robert Albert during his late teens. He left high school due to financial pressures during the great depression. From 1934-1936, he attended the Art Student's League in New York and did an apprenticeship with illustrator William Heaslip's studio. From 1936-1939, Weinstein worked for Walt Disney Studios in Los Angeles. It was here on the West Coast that he met his future wife, Vivian Levin. During WWII he joined the U.S. Army as a private and he was stationed in England. He moved to Paris after the liberation and became Art Director for the European Theater of Operations. He then returned to New York and became a magazine art director, first at Esquire and then at Charm magazines.
In 1949, his son David was born and in 1950 he and his family returned to Los Angeles. He worked for the fine book publishing firm Anderson, Richie & Simon for 25 years. In 1960, Weinstein examined a set of Wilhelm Hester glass plate negatives and convinced Emerson Spear of Los Angeles to purchase the collection as gift to the San Francisco Maritime Museum in memory of his grandfather, Captain Alexander Spear. Acting as Spear's agent, Weinstein flew to Seattle, inspected the balance of the collection, secured a bill of sale, and supervised the packing and shipment to San Francisco. Weinstein was a self-educated scholar and was the author of nine books, some about maritime history. He was also in demand as a historical consultant to photo collectors, scholars, authors and documentary filmmakers. Bob Weinstein died on April 10, 1995 and was survived by his wife and son.
