Scope and Content of Collection
El Centro refers "to the linkages between the Chicano Studies Institute (research), the Department of Chicano Studies (teaching),
the El Congreso, Building 406 (that houses the El Congreso, some EOP counseling offices, and some offices of the CSI), and
the Coleccion Tloque Nahuaque (library collection). One of the demands of the last hunger strike to which the campus administration
agreed was to recognize and preserve the integrity of the 'El Centro' concept (that includes an identifiable library collection).
Students also often refer to Building 406 behind the library as 'El Centro.' El Congreso is the student organization that
resides there, and itself is made up of various sub-organizations such as Los Curanderos (pre-med), Los Inginieros (engineering
