Biography / Administrative History

Harold S. Jacoby (1907-2000) was Professor of Sociology at the University of Pacific, Stockton, California (1933-62, 1968-76) and Dean of the College of Pacific (1962-68). Jacoby was also a member of the staff of the Tule Lake Relocation Center in California (1942), the Japanese-American Resettlement Program in Chicago (1943), and the United Nations Relief & Rehabilitation Program in the Middle East (1944). He was a visiting professor at the University of Connecticut, Wittenburg College, Whittier College, Millsaps College, and Yamaguchi University (1956/57). Dr. Jacoby published A Half-century appraisal of East Indians in the United States (1986) and Pacific: Yesterday and the day before that (1989). He is best known, however, for his teaching. Kara Brewer notes in her foreword to Jacoby's Pacific that, "Numerous alumni have told me of the change he wrought in their lives and values--making them aware of their responsibility to improve society, eliminating racial and ethnic barriers to equality." Jacoby used the materials in this collection in preparing coursework (1946-1953).

Scope and Content of Collection

The papers in this collection derive from Jacoby's activities as a teacher. The bulk of them constitute a record of hearings conducted by the U.S. House of Representatives on the subject of migrant labor (1940-42). The collection also includes publications from the WPA Division of Social Research and Farm Security Administration, with an emphasis on California and Arizona. Jacoby first acquired materials on migrant labor during the late 1930s. Later, while working for the federal government (1942-43), he added to this specialized labor library. Dr. Jacoby used the materials in preparing sociology coursework at the College of the Pacific (1946-55). He then gave this collection to Holt-Atherton in 1977.
