Abstract: This collection comprises printed materials, primarily dance programs, documenting significant international dancers, dance
companies, festivals, performances, and events. The bulk of this collection comprises materials on 20th century American
and European ballet performers and companies, such as the American Ballet Theatre, Ballet Russes and related companies. The
collection also contains dance programs documenting world and folk genres, and international dance styles, primarily Indian,
Japanese, and Spanish. A small group of printed ephemera documents various dance festivals, dance companies, and individuals
such as Isadora Duncan, George Balanchine, Mary Wigman, and others.

Acquisition Information
This collection was created by UC Irvine Special Collections and Archives staff from a variety of performing arts collections
in cases where the dance programs were tangential to the collection's focus, including the Eugene Loring Papers (MS-P02),
Ruth Clark Lert Dance Library and Archive (MS-P09), and Clarence McGehee Collection on Ruth St. Denis (MS-P25). Sources and
dates of acquisition are not known.

Collection Scope and Content Summary
This collection comprises printed materials, primarily dance programs, documenting significant international dancers, dance
companies, festivals,
performances, and events. The bulk of this collection comprises materials on 20th century American and European ballet performers
and companies, such as the American Ballet Theatre, Ballet Russes and related companies (including Serge Diaghilev), Ballet
Theatre,
Bolshoi Ballet, Denishawn (including Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn), Martha Graham, New York City Ballet, Anna Pavlova, Royal
Ballet, Russian Ballet, Sadler's
Wells Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet. The collection also contains dance programs that document folk genres and international
dance styles, primarily Indian, Japanese, and Spanish. A small group of printed ephemera documents various dance festivals,
dance
festivals, dance companies, and individuals, such as Isadora Duncan, George Balanchine, Mary Wigman, and others.
Some programs contain biographical profiles of performers, numerous illustrations, and reproductions of photographs
by significant artists, such as Léon Basket, André Derain, Nataliia Segeevna Goncharova, George Platt Lynes, and
Pablo Picasso.
The term "event program" is used to describe materials printed for particular performances with information concerning features
of the performance, usually with the name of participants or performing arts organizations. Event programs often contain specific
times, dates, cast, and ticket information. The term "souvenir program" is used to describe materials that were issued annually
or seasonally, often lacking specific information about featured performances, times, dates, and performance cast.

This collection is organized into three series.
- Series 1. Ballet and modern dance programs, 1909-1987. 8.2 linear ft.
- Series 2. World dance programs, 1933-1987. 1.4 linear ft.
- Series 3. Dance ephemera, 1920-1987. 0.7 linear ft.
