This album of 56 mounted photographs was given to Captain Blanding by Harriet Danforth Becker Mitchell (Mrs. John L. Mitchell)
as a souvenir of a trip to the Pacific Coast in 1887 by the Board of Managers of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer
Soldiers.
Background
This scrapbook was created in 1887, the year Congress passed the Dawes Act. This legislation was designed to disenfranchise
American Indian populations by breaking up traditional systems of land tenure and imposing a system of government-regulated
private property ownership.
