Biographical Note
John "Red" Sweeney was a technical sergeant in the United States Army and taught military and combat science to the Chinese
Army under the command of General Joseph W. Stilwell at the Ramgarh Training Center in India from 1942 to 1944. After this
assignment, known as the "Stillwell Mission," Sweeney founded and served as Commander of the Sentry Post American Legion and
the Basha China-Burma-India Veterans Post Association in Worcester and was a member of related American Legion groups. He
also produced materials after the war such as the monograph,
Ramgarh: Now It Can Be Told and videotapes about his instructions on the training of the Chinese Army. Sweeney passed away October 20th, 2007 at the
Rose Monahan Hospice Residence.
