Series 2 Correspondence 1918-1986, undated

Physical Description: 10 linear feet (10 cartons)

Arrangement

Alphabetical

Scope and Content Note

Hammond's professional correspondence is the focus of this series, which was arranged according to his filing system. A majority of the original folders were found in reverse chronological order and the remaining folders were arranged accordingly; the only instance where this does not apply is in his correspondence with his writing partner Agapito Rey. Named folders consist of at least five items; the majority of these folders are personal names, but there are some subject files or corporate names. General correspondence can be found at the end of each letter of the alphabet, and additional subjects or people were filed in the other series when appropriate.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of writings by Hammond and others, both published and unpublished, and it is arranged by form into the following subseries: Books, Speeches, Articles and Essays, and Other

SubSeries 4.1 Books 1924-1986, undated

Physical Description: 21.92 linear feet (21 cartons, 18 folders, 2.3 file-boxes)

Arrangement

Alphabetical

Scope and Content Note

The materials in this subseries detail the work that went into many of the books Hammond wrote or published. The contents are arranged by title and then by type of material. If correspondence exists about a book, it is usually found here. After Hammond retired as Director of the Bancroft Library, much of his time was devoted to writing. These later works are well-documented and many drafts were produced. After drafts, research is the largest subset of material. See individual titles for more information.
