Biography / Administrative History
Oliver Cromwell (O.C.) Applegate Jr. was the grandson of Lindsay Applegate, one of the founders of the South Road of the Oregon
Trail. His father, O.C. Applegate, Sr. was a captain in the Oregon Milita and served as a scout and interpreter during the
Modoc War of 1872-3. He was also appointed as a U.S. Commissioner in 1873 and then Klamath Indian Agent in 1898. His son,
O.C. Applegate, Jr. came to San Francisco in 1915, where he became a resident and remained for the duration of his life, except
for time he spent in the army during World War I.

Scope and Content of Collection
One, three-page letter to H.P. Van Sicklen, Secretary of the Society of
California Pioneers, explaining some details of the Applegate family history. Also includes a color map that indicates the
Applegate Route, also known as the Southern Road, of the Oregon Trail.
