Scope and Content Note

This series details the work of the Community History Project (CHP) and its Community Resource Archives, a unique collection of books, documents, news clippings, oral histories, photographs, papers, posters, recordings, videotapes, and writings that document the histories of Bay Area American Indian communities from the 1940s on. The collection was intended to be a living resource created by and for the community, but it was also accessible to outside researchers. The series consists of administrative, program, and project files, and includes correspondence and memos, exhibit materials, financial records, fundraising materials, materials related to organizing and caring for archival papers and photographs, and personnel information. Includes files from the California Indian Music Project, the photograph exhibit, "Pride of Place: Sustaining Our Community," the "Reclaiming Our History" project, and working bibliographies about urban history and American Indians. Because CHP was a project of the Intertribal Friendship House, there is overlap with Series 1 and 1A. Because Susan Lobo was the coordinator of the project, there is overlap with her papers in Series 7.

"Reclaiming Our History" Project 1973-1999

Scope and Content Note

The "Reclaiming Our History" Project focused on locating photographs, tapes, and written sources documenting the history of the Bay Area American Indian community in libraries, museums, and family collections and compiling inventories of those collections. The goal was to create a resource guide to, and database of, these sources, and to organize a one-day conference on reclaiming history. There are inventories; a bibliography; materials about collections in archives; administrative files; funding materials, including the evaluation furor over the California Council for the Humanities grant; general files, including grant applications, and meeting minutes; a fundraising flyer; and lists of collection locations. There are also indices to slides of IFH staff and to an [audio]tape of a 500-mile run.
