Nigeria, Rhodesia, and Nyasaland research. 1950-1970

Arrangement

The first three sub-series of this series consist of communications, field, and background research Nixon conducted while abroad in Nigeria, Rhodesia, and Nyasaland. The remaining sub-series, drafts and data, were produced by Nixon upon returning from his field research. In each of these series and subseries, Rhodesia materials consistently proceed Nigeria materials due to the relatively limited amount of information Nixon collected on Rhodesia compared to Nigeria.

Field & Interview Notes 1959-1961

Arrangement

This sub-series is arranged in the methodological process by which Nixon's conducted his research. The first part of the sub-series contains spiral notebooks used by Nixon to take notes in the field. Next in the sub-series are Nixon's transcribed interview notes and field notes, separated by his Nigeria and Rhodesia trips. The interview notes and field notes are grouped separately, but chronologically ordered.

Scope and Content Note

This sub-series contains Nixon's spiral field notebooks and transcribed interview and field notes during his Nigeria and Rhodesia research trip from 1959-1961. Nixon interviewed numerous government officials, including the former Northern Rhodesian (now Zambia) President, Kenneth Kaunda. Nixon primarily inquired into both the political and economic situation of the countries which he visited.

Scope and Content Note

This sub-series consists of a variety of publications including newspapers, newsletters, magazines, articles, reports, and professional photographs collected by Nixon from the early 1950s to the late 1960s. Distinct from the policy positions detailed in government publications, these materials cover a variety of topics including election results, political party propaganda, opinion pieces, and scholarly articles. Nixon collected these publications to further his understanding of Nigerian and Rhodesian economic, political, and social issues. Although this sub-series consists primarily of publications, several folders also contain Nixon's notes and drafts.

Nigeria & West Africa Data 1950-1965

Arrangement

This data series first contains 11 boxes of data compiled by Nixon for his Nigerian Expenditure Project. These boxes are arranged according to the order by which they were processed: data cards, output tapes, and then computer printouts. The final two boxes contain data for the West Africa Comparative Analysis Project

Scope and Content Note

The Nigerian Expenditure Data consists of IBM data processing cards, IBM output tapes, and computer printouts detailing the results of the data processing. Nixon also compiled an extensive bibliography of Nigeria newspapers and book sources, which he recorded according to subject on index cards. Nixon also collaborated in the "West Africa Comparative Analysis Project", from which he compiled four boxes of data (in the form of index cards) on African elites and leaders.

South Africa Research 1949-1967

Scope and Content Note

As an Associate Professor in 1954, Nixon received a one-year appointment at the University of Natal in Durban, Union of South Africa. This series contains Nixon's drafts and notes about various South African political topics written during and after his appointment. Nixon also collected a variety of Apartheid publications which are also included in this series.

Drafts & Notes 1955-1967

Scope and Content Note

This sub-series contains drafts and notes written by Nixon during and after his trip to South Africa in 1964. Nixon wrote notes and articles on South African political topics, which includes but is not limited to: Nationalism, Non-European Franchise, and Education Policy. This sub-series also contains Nixon's recommendations regarding U.S. Policy toward Southern Rhodesia. The success of the Rhodesian independence movement against British colonialism in November, 1965 spurred an international response due to the questioned "legality" of Rhodesian independence and the impact of this event on politics in South Africa. The State Department solicited Nixon to develop policy statements in response to this abrupt change in regime.

Political Theory

Scope and Content Note

In addition to his Comparative and American political interests, Prof. Nixon was an avid Political Theory scholar and teacher. Nixon began his political theory scholarship in graduate school under Dr. George Sabine, which culminated in his dissertation "Free-Speech for Anti-Democratic Groups?" Throughout his career, Nixon incorporated political theory into his research inquiries. The philosophies of Max Weber and Karl Marx were among Nixon's foremost theoretical interests. Prof. Nixon began his "Power and Responsibility" project later in his career and continued this research after retirement.
