Arrangement
Documents which were copied in the Archivo General de la Nación (AGN), Mexico City, by
methods other than microfilm are listed in this finding aid. The copies were made
primarily during the period from 1920 to 1945. The transcripts are mostly typed, with a
few copies made by hand. The prints were, for the most part, enlarged from nitrate film.
In some cases, the nitrate has been replaced by safety film; in others, the nitrate was
destroyed because it was hazardous. Professors Woodrow Wilson Borah and France Vinton
Scholes were largely responsible for these documents having come to the Bancroft Library.
In the late 1940's The Bancroft Library, guided by Professor George P. Hammond, began a
program of microfilming in Mexico and Spain, and some of the materials in this collection
are also available on microfilm. No attempt has been made to correlate the modern
microfilm to the paper copies. The use of the microfilm notebooks and this guide together
would make such a correlation possible. The documents in the collection have been checked
against Herbert Eugene Bolton's
Guide to Materials for the History
of the United States in the Principal Archives of Mexico.
The arrangement of
ramos follows that of the AGN. In
addition, within the
ramo, documents are identified with
tomo or
legajo number, and
expediente, folio, or date to provide a citation to the
original source.
Documents, unless otherwise marked, are transcripts.
