Biography

Dr. Louis A. Gottschalk is an internationally known pioneer in the neurosciences. He joined the University of California, Irvine in 1967 as founding chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. He became Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Human Behavior in the College of Medicine in 1988.

1943 M.D., cum laude, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri.
1948-1953 Certification, Adult and Child Psychoanalysis, Institute for Psychoanalysis, Chicago, Illinois.
1967 Becomes founding chair of UCI Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior.
1977 Ph.D., Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute.
1993 Receives the Daniel G. Aldrich, Jr. Distinguished University Service Award.
1996 Receives the UCI Medal, UCI's highest honor.
1997 Donates $1.5 million to create the Louis A. and Helen C. Gottschalk Endowed Fund in the College of Medicine.
