Research files 1948-1981

Scope and Contents

The Research files series includes field notebooks, surveys, background reports, maps, correspondence, and clippings related to Ward's work in Hong Kong. The series is divided into three subseries to reflect Ward's main research interests in Hong Kong Fisheries, Industry, and Cantonese Opera. Each subseries is arranged in rough chronological order. The series captures anthrological data from repeated research trips to the same few communities over 30 years, providing a detailed look at the fishing community in Hong Kong during a period of change. The bulk of the records relate to Ward's study of fisheries, but the series also includes a smaller study of a glass factory and material on festivals and Cantonese Opera. The Cantonese Opera subseries includes audio recordings of interviews with performers.

Photographs 1950-1982

Scope and Contents

The photographic series includes photographs and negatives relating to Ward's work with fisheries, factory, and performers. The series is divided by format and then arranged in rough chronological order. The photographs mainly depict fishing villages dating from the 1950s or festivals and Cantonese opera performances from the early 1980s. A small amount of material depicts workers in a Hong Kong factory in the 1960s. Also notable is a small group of photographs depicting the San Francisco Bay Area in 1982.
