Historical Note
POTRIMPOS, a bark, was built in 1887 in Hamburg by Blohm and Voss, for F. Laeisz. On December 19, 1896, she was stranded on Long Beach at the entrance to the Columbia River and became a total loss. The wreck was sold to Ford & Stokes of Astoria, OR, in May 1897.

The collection was donated to the San Francisco Maritime Museum by Charles J. Thompson on December 19, 1952. The materials
were accessioned into the National Park Service when the museum was made a unit of Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GOGA-735)
and then were transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park after the establishment of the new park in 1989
(SAFR-1).

One postcard is captioned "Potrimpos wrecked, March 19, 1896" (note, the date is wrong). The back of the card states that
two men were trapped inside the hull for several days and were finally rescued after the storm. The second is captioned "Canby
Life Savers going to a wreck."
