Description
This collection of over 100 maps
documents the State of California, but especially its southern counties. Although the maps
are predominantly reproductions they also include a number of originals, with some dating
back to the 1820s. Early plats and diseños document the settlement of Southern California,
with an emphasis on Orange County, and provide information on land ownership, land
divisions, and geographical features. Other more recent thematic maps illustrate the state's
geology, show transportation grids, and document the California coast and islands. The
collection also includes a large number of contemporary city and county maps and large-scale
USGS (United States Geological Survey) maps. The maps occasionally include neighboring
states.
