sent to South Africa from Germany where he continuted his education. Hochschild enrolled in the University of Capetown where
he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1936 and a Master of Science degree in mathematics in 1937. In 1938 Hochschild
was admitted to the Princeton University Ph.D. program where he completed his doctoral degree in 1941. He accepted a faculty
position at the University of Illinois in 1948. Hochschild accepted a position at the University of California, Berkeley in
1955-1956 as a visiting professor and was then offered a full professorship in the mathematics department at the University
of California, Berkeley in 1958.
During his 25 years at the University of California at Berkeley, Hochschild taught and produced numerous papers on Algebra,
Lie groups and Lie Alegebra and Their Representations, and Cohomology. Hochschild fully retired from the University of California,
Berkeley in 1982. Hochschild died in El Cerrito, CA in 2010 at the age of 95.
