Administrative Information

Arrangement

The collection is arranged thematically in 8 series: Series 1: Vertical Files; Series 2: Humboldt County Photographic Survey; Series 3: Albums (boxed); Series 4: Postcards; Series 5: Save the Redwoods League Officers; Series 6: Photographer Files; Series 7: Miscellaneous Negatives and Lantern Slides; Series 8: Miscellany.

Biography/Organization History

The Save the Redwoods League is a non-profit organization, established in 1918, whose mission "is to protect and restore redwood forests and connect people with their peace and beauty so these wonders of the natural world flourish." (from Save the Redwoods League website, 2016.)

Scope and Content Note

This collection chiefly consists of photographs (approximately 9,700 photographic prints, 5,400 negatives, and 1,000 slides) of redwood trees, forests and parks in coastal Northern California, as well as giant sequoia trees in the Sierra Nevada area, taken by, taken for, or collected by, Save the Redwoods League staff and members to support its mission. There is additional pictorial material relating to the League itself. Of note are images of League official and National Parks Director Newton B. Drury, photographs of California Governors Edmund G. Brown and Ronald Reagan, U.S. Presidents Herbert Hoover, Lyndon B. Johnson and Bill Clinton, First Lady Lady Bird Johnson, logging, grove dedications, Dawn Redwood at Mo-tao-chi in Central China, and highway and erosion studies in Northern California redwood country. Also includes posters that relate the age of redwood trees to events in history, and panoramic photographs.
Folders contain photographs (or prints of digital images) unless noted. Other material includes postcards, prints, posters, drawings, brochure and pamphlet samples, some documents, newsclippings, ceremonial pens and plaques.

Series 1: Vertical Files. 1897-2014

Physical Description:
Extent: cartons 1-8; A box 1; AX box 1, folders 1-20; B box 1, folders 1-15, 17-18; C box 1; D folder 1; F folder 1; H folder 1; NEG boxes 1-5; NEG(gl) boxes 1, 3, 8, 9; NNEG boxes 1-6

Arrangement

Arranged alphabetically by subject.

Scope and Content of Collection

Subject file that consists chiefly of material removed from file cabinets of Save the Redwoods League offices. The bulk of the material is photographic prints that range from snapshots taken by staff members to 8x10 prints and panoramas taken by professional photographers. Other kinds of non-photographic material included, such as posters, documents and newsclippings, are noted in the folder content notes.
The bulk of the subjects include state parks, state recreation areas, and national parks, landscapes of redwood forests and watersheds, logging, scenic highways through the areas, dedication ceremonies, and visitors to the parks. There are also images related to the Save the Redwoods League organization and its leaders.
Most locations are in California, especially Northern California. Major parks include Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Calaveras Big Trees State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, Redwood National Park, and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

Additional Note

Original alphabetical arrangement and folder heading descriptions from the file cabinet folders have largely been retained. Some folder headings have been changed by Bancroft Library staff for consistency, and to keep like subjects together. Some material not originally found in the vertical files, such as thin notebook type albums, have been filed here by Bancroft Library staff for researcher convenience. Oversize materials are described in this series as well. Subjects listed are 1 folder, unless otherwise noted.

Series 2: Humboldt County Photographic Survey. 1900-circa 1965, bulk 1920s-1930s

Physical Description:
Extent: cartons 9-10; NEG boxes 3, 5; NNEG boxes 3-4,6-9.

Arrangement

Arranged thematically based on number scheme assigned by Save the Redwoods League.

Scope and Content of Collection

Photographic survey of land in Humboldt County, mainly along U.S. Highway 101 (Redwood Highway) corridor, moving from south to north. The bulk of images are of redwood groves, especially in and around Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Includes views of the Eel River, South Fork of Eel River, coastal areas, and a few views in Mendocino County.

Additional Note

The photographs are identified by a rough number scheme assigned by Save the Redwoods League, from 1 to 12100s. Lower numbers are in the southern part of Humboldt County, and the higher numbers are in the northern part of the county. Numbering schemes 12000s to13000s are subject oriented. Eel River and South Fork of Eel River folders are surveys of the rivers, but the photographs are unnumbered. Some unnumbered, but related photographs were found interfiled with numbered photographs.
The material arrived at the Bancroft Library either in the form of an album, or foldered loose photographs. Many albums were disbound, and photos removed from pages by Save the Redwoods League. Album pages and loose photographs were foldered together with related photographs and negatives. Albums that arrived at the Bancroft library intact were disbound and foldered by library staff for easier use and conservation purposes.
The loose photographs are a combination of intact album pages, photographs removed from album pages, and related photographs. Many items are duplicates of images in the albums, and follow the same numbering system as the albums. Many of the original folders these loose items were housed in were identified as, "Project I. Humboldt Redwoods."
NITRATE NEGATIVES (NNEG boxes): CLOSED TO RESEARCH DUE TO HAZARDOUS MATERIALS RESTRICTIONS.
