Processing Information

Captions have been supplied by library staff. Descriptive information -- including identification of subjects, locations and dates -- was gathered from Anthony’s book, as well as the Gene Anthony section of the Wolfgang’s Vault web site (http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/gene-anthony/memorabilia/) and other online sources. A few photographs were assigned item numbers shortly after receipt of the collection, ca. 2005. The photographs have since been rearranged. Previous item numbers are noted for those prints whose item numbers were changed during this rearrangement.

Scope and Content Note

Original large-format photographs, most of the images of which are reproduced in Anthony's book Summer of Love : Haight-Ashbury at Its Highest (published in 1980). Images document people, places, events and street scenes associated with the counter-culture movement of the mid- to late 1960s in the San Francisco Bay Area, especially as evidenced in the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco and culminating in the 1967 summer of love associated with this community. Among the individuals, music groups and other organizations depicted in the collection are Grateful Dead, the Charlatans, Bill Graham, Timothy Leary, Sonny Barger and Hell's Angels, Chet Helms, the Diggers, Michael McClure, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Jerry Rubin, Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Herb Caen, the Cockettes, Sexual Freedom League, Kenneth Rexroth, and John Altoon. Locations depicted include Haight Street and the Haight-Ashbury district, Golden Gate Park, Grateful Dead headquarters at 710 Ashbury St., the Fillmore Auditorium, the Winterland, the Psychedelic Shop, the Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic, and City Lights Bookstore. Events include the Love Pageant Rally, the Trips Festival, Now Day, and the Human Be-In. Also depicted in the collection are Ken Kesey's 1939 International Harvester bus Furthur and many unidentified hippies, flower children and other young people who gravitated to San Francisco during this time.
