Transferred from the A.L. Kroeber papers (BANC MSS C-B 925), and Kroeber family papers (BANC MSS 82/132 c).
Biographical Information
Alfred L. Kroeber was an Anthropologist at the University of California, Berkeley. He is best known for his work on native
peoples of California and the American West. His first wife, Henriette Rothschild, died of tuberculosis in 1913. He married
Theodora Kracaw Brown in 1926, with whom he had two children, Karl Kroeber and Ursula K. Le Guin. He also adopted Theodore
Kroeber and Clifton B. Kroeber, two children from Theodora’s previous marriage. Alfred Kroeber died in Paris in 1960.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection is primarily family photographs: portraits of Alfred Kroeber and Thoedora Kroeber (some are publicity photos),
Alfred Kroeber's relatives, and snapshots of Kroeber’s children and grandchildren. In addition, there are photos related
to Alfred Kroeber's professional career including photographs of colleagues, Juan Dolores, Ishi, Robert Spott, and other native
peoples. There are some photos of trips to Peru, Mexico, Paris and US locations.
