Series 18: Negatives. 1959-1981 BANC PIC 2000.012--NEG

Physical Description:
Extent: approximately 23,960 negatives
Physical Description: Negatives contained in: NEG boxes 1-33.

Arrangement

Negatives arranged chronologically (roughly).
Negatives were received from the photographer in boxes or wrapped in bundles by format (size), and labeled with a subject, a date or a number. Most negatives were rehoused by library staff in the order found with dividers indicating breaks between the original boxes/bundles, and arranged by date. The early negatives were arranged by format and the photographer's number based on a year (59000-67185 for 1959-1967). The 35mm negatives were sorted within the bundles, and strips from the same rolls matched when possible.
Negatives that matched images in the photographer's two books, as well as Playland at the Beach and carousel room photographs were pulled and housed separately in NEG boxes 32-33. Negatives of Mississippi were also pulled, and then housed together in NEG boxes 18 and 25. A marker was left in place of the removed negative in the NEG box, and was noted in the box listing of the finding aid to show the original location.

Scope and Content Note

Original negatives taken by Chauncey Hare. Chiefly, if not all, are black and white film.

Access Information

Material in NEG boxes 23-24 is restricted due to privacy issues.

Additional Note

While Chauncey Hare's photographic prints include very little information about the images, the negatives are filed with original sleeves that are labeled with subject and/or location and date. Many sleeves, especially the early negatives, include information about the camera, film, exposure, and developer used. Titles provided in the finding aid are from annotations written by the photographer on the original negative sleeves and bundles. The first section, negatives by numbers 59000-67185, the titles are often a summation of locations and subjects written on the sleeves. Some dates on this list, as transcribed from original packaging, conflict with dates in book or with labels on photographic prints.

Series 19: Slides and Slideshows. 1968-1986

Physical Description:
Extent: 4155 slides
Physical Description: Slides contained in: carton 1; PIC boxes 3-4. Cassette tapes contained in: phonotape box 4.

Arrangement

Slides and slideshows arranged thematically, then roughly chronologically. Slides were received from the photographer in boxed slide carousel trays, or in slide protector sheets in three-ring notebooks. Library staff rehoused the slides in archival slide sheets, which were then foldered as they were found in either a notebook or carousel slide tray. Like subjects kept together when possible. The first slides and slideshows tend to be about corporations, organizations and unidentified people related to them. The second group is focused on people. Miscellaneous slides of titles and charts, and history of photography slideshow follow.
All seven slideshows in carousel tray boxes were received with a soundtrack on cassette tape for the corresponding slideshow, and a typed transcription of the soundtrack. The transcripts have been foldered with slides. Phonotapes have been housed separately.
It is unclear how the slides formerly in the notebooks are related to the slides of the same topic from the carousel trays. There were empty spaces in the notebook slide protector sleeves as if slides had been removed. Transcripts for the related slideshow soundtrack and other documentation were often included in the notebooks with these slides. These documents have been folded in with the rehoused slides.

Scope and Content Note

Black and white, and color 35mm slides, many of which are copies Chauncey Hare made of his photographs for slideshow presentations. A portion of slides are original photographs by Chauncey Hare. There are some copies of images by other photographers, as with New York City subway slides, and history of photography slideshow.

Access Information

The master tapes (items 119-125) are restricted do to fragility.

Additional Note

Titles provided in the finding aid are from annotations written by the photographer on the original carousel tray boxes and notebooks. Quoted notes in finding aid listing are from a guidebook provided by Chauncey Hare to the Bancroft Library in 2005.
