Scope and Content of Series

Correspondence, notebooks and notes, writings, sketches, and other papers. The outgoing correspondence consists primarily of letters J.H.E.Partington wrote to his wife, Sarah, while on painting excursions throughout England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and continental Europe during the 1870s and 1880s. Also included are a small number of letters Partington wrote to his parents and his children. Incoming correspondence includes a folder of letters from Ambrose Bierce (sent in 1892-1893) and Samuel Bancroft, Delaware industrialist and collector of Pre-Raphaelite art.

Scope and Content of Series

Correspondence, notebooks/diaries, notes, and other papers. Outgoing correspondence consists primarily of letters from Blanche Partington to her mother and siblings (and one letter to her father). There is also outgoing correspondence to Samuel, Mary and Joseph Bancroft. Incoming correspondence consists primarily of letters from a range of prominent West Coast artists, writers, and journalists, among others. These include Ambrose Bierce, Henry Pike Bowie, Ina Coolbrith, Charmian London, Jack London, Joaquin Miller, Juanita Miller, Yoshimatsu Nakata and family (Jack London's valet), Yone Noguchi, Teru Shimada (Japanese-American film actor), Upton Sinclair, Carrie and George Sterling, and Oscar Weil. Incoming correspondence also includes letters from the Bancrofts in Delaware. In addition, this series includes diaries, notebooks, and notes, including notes Blanche Partington took for her music reviews and articles for The Call newspaper.

Scope and Contents

Correspondence, clippings, and publicity materials and programs. Outgoing correspondence consists primarily of correspondence to other members of the Partington family sent from Phyllis' (Frances') studies or stints with various opera companies in New York, Europe, and other areas of the United States between 1910 and 1930. There is substantial correspondence between Phyllis Partington and Samuel and Joseph Bancroft in Delaware. Noteworthy among the other materials in this series are the clippings scrapbooks that document Frances Peralta's opera career from 1913 to 1930.

Scope and Contents

Subject files kept by one or another member of the Partington family as well as poscards and miscellany. The subject files often include clippings, original poems or writings, correspondence, and secondary material. The series includes subject files on Ambrose Bierce, Jack London, Joaquin Miller, Yone Noguchi, and Carrie and George Sterling. The George Sterling subject file includes a number of original postcards addressed to Sterling from a variety of senders as well as clippings on his death and tributes. The Jack London subject file includes material on Jack London as well as two diaries (in Japanese and English) kept by Jack London's valet, Yoshimatsu Nakata, from approximately 1908-1910. These diaries appear to have come into the possession of Blanche Partington, who had established a friendship with the Nakata family.
